Apologies to Hugh, who I missed out in the Barts Bash report.

He organised the young sailors, manned a safety boat and generally helped out and in fact always helps out and makes a great contribution tot he club.

We joined clubs from all over the UK and other parts of the world to compete in the annual Bart’s Bash race, an event set up in memory of Andrew Simpson to raise money to enable disabled and disadvantaged children to go sailing.

It was a beautiful morning with light WSW wind about 2-5 mph for the Juniors race and picking up slightly to 3-8 mph for the adults. The sun shone and the temperature was in the mid- twenties.

Junior’s Race

James used the normal flagpole start with a first beat to A (past 5 on the buoy line) then 9, 5, 6, 7 and back through the start. There were 11 starters and Thomas M (Radial) was first back through the start line followed by Rhys (4.7) and Emily (Topper). Then there was quite a gap back to the rest of the fleet which was led by Phoebe (Oppie) in 4^th place and Lucy (Topper) in 5^th. The two Oppies of Rohan and Ben came through the line close together and they were followed by Evie in a Pico, Pippa in a Topper and then Izzy and another Oppie (who unfortunately had not signed in.

The first three were sent round for a second lap, which was bad luck for them as the wind died away and it took them considerably longer to complete the second lap than it had taken for the first lap.

The first six on the water were –

1^st Thomas; 2^nd Rhys; 3^rd Emily; 4^th Phoebe; 5^th Lucy; 6^th Rohan.

On corrected time this changes to 1^st Phoebe; 2^nd Rhys; 3^rd Emily; 4^th Lucy; 5^th Thomas

Adult’s Race

There was a bit of a delay before the adults could get away as James wrestled with the problem of a constantly shifting wind. In fact, he had two different courses on the race sheet before settling on a third option! He finally decided that he would change the course and change the start line. He then used a committee boat start parallel to the bank and going straight out to A then 9, 4, 2, 5, 6, 7 and back through the start.

The wind was a bit better for the adults and Ralph (Laser) was first back across the line one minute ahead of Sam & Newton (RS 200) followed 30 seconds later by Jess in her Laser. After 2 minutes Mike A (Lightning) crossed in 4^th place not far ahead of Dean & Nick (Vago), Alistair S (Laser) and Thomas (Laser). Nev (Comet) and Joe (Laser) came through battling for 8^th place and they were about a minute ahead of Peter R (s/h Enterprise). Then along came the Mirrors of Ron on his own and Jewels with little Tahlia as crew, followed 30 seconds later by Simon B with son James in the RSC Sport 14 (considerably lower Tech than his usual Blaze). Rhys and Emily were next renewing their battle from the first race with Rick and Lottie in Lasers just behind them. Bringing up the rear of the fleet were Paul W (flying an enormous red pennant – perhaps that’s a keep clear signal!) and David Knight in his Laser 2000.

The second lap saw the first three away and clear, but Peter R had fired up his booster and gained six places to move up to 4^th.Thomasmoved up to 6^th by passing Alistair and Dean & Nick retired from 5^th position, Joe got past Nev to move up to 7^th place and Rick also fired up his engines and gained six places to move to 9^th . Emily passed Rhys, Simon and Jewels to move up to 12^th place and further back Lottie gained a place.

At the end of the third and last Ralph finished 1^st with Sam & Newton in 2^nd place and Peter just pipped Jess for 3^rd spot. Joe passed Thomas and Mike to take 5^th and lower down the order Simon gained four places, Rhys repassed Emily and Paul W got past Lottie. The final order on the water was –

1^st Ralph; 2^nd Sam & Newton; 3^rd Peter; 4^th Jess: 5^th Joe; 6^th Mike A

Following the racing Barbara cooked sausages and burgers and there were tables of cakes made by Ann Day, Suzi Primrose, Sam Shears and Nick Heaven (who had also brought down games  including tossing the horse shoes (thought  there would be a technical name for that but on looking on the web, it is called Tossing Horseshoes – makes sense)

After a bite to eat the boat building began in earnest. Brian had brought his usual kit for the younger sailors to build their own boat from plastic bottles, bits or wood and other things. Brian and Richard (of course) could not resist building their own craft to also compete. Brian and Richard then released the craft from the safety boats with James on the bank as adjudicator.

As far as we can remember (and not including parental assistance!), Molly Steele won the competition against boats built by Jemima Day, Joe Day, Izzy Heaven, Bea Primrose, Rhys Primrose, Emily Shears and Phoebe Shears. There was one other who left early, but their name escapes us along with a lot of other things these days!
However, not forgetting the adults who were disqualified (Richard and Brian Moore!) fun was had by all.

With the lovely weather and 30 boats racing (11 Juniors and 19 Adults) and burgers, cakes and messing about it was a really good day. Well done to everyone who took part and helped out to make it a special day for this year’s Barts Bash.

This should have been the evening when everyone decorated their boats with lights and sailed serenely around the lake providing a spectacular finale to the evening races. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas and with a 16 mph SW it was deemed unsafe to be sailing around in the dark, so the obligation for lights was waived and the race shortened to allow everyone to get home in the light. Curtis set the first beat to 4 then A, 9, 5, 8, 6, 7 and back through the start.

There were 13 starters, although Paul W was still on the bank when the gun went. He then decided to launch quickly and gave a demonstration of how to rig a Laser on the water with a little bit of help from James and Doug in the Safety boat!

Meanwhile Simon B was steaming away in his Blaze and crossed the line about a minute ahead of Newton & Ellen (RS 200) with Steve S (Solo) another 30 seconds back. Karen (Radial) came through in 4^th place not far ahead of Dean & Nick, who were having fun flying their spinnaker in the Vago. Hadey (4.7) crossed in 6^th place just in front of Rick and Milo in Radials with Will (4.7) just 10 seconds behind them. He was followed by Ron (Mirror) and Alicia (Radial). Missing from this list was John H (Laser) who rounded No 7 in about 5^th place but proceeded to tack and sail right up to the buoy line without going through the start line! Paul W had got going and was happily pottering around the course marks, but not necessarily in the right order!  

On the second lap Simon and Newton & Ellen were well away at the front and Karen had passed Steve to move up to 3^rd place. Dean & Nick were still flying around in 5^th, but Milo had passed both Hadey and Rick to move up to 6^th.Will had gained a place by also passing Hadey and Alicia had got past Ron. John H was still going well and was actually 4^th across the line.

On the last lap the only change in position was Rick repassing Will to move back to seventh heaven!

Simon crossed the finish line about 3 minutes ahead of Newton & Ellen and they were about the same distance ahead of Karen. The final positions on the water were-

1^st Simon; 2^nd Newton & Ellen; 3^rd Karen ;4^th Steve; 5^th Dean & Nick; 6^th Milo

As a point of interest John H was 4^th across the line and received a consolatory toot from Mike A on the hooter as did Paul W who actually had bothered to deck his Radial with lights earning the accolade of best lit boat on the night!

On corrected time the first four boats keep their positions, but Ron takes 5^th place with Milo retaining 6^th spot. Simon can thank his lucky stars that the original Twilight Race Trophy (which was a horrendous plastic candelabra) has disappeared.

Well although we did not get the light fantastic, it was a good race to end the evening season and we did have a lovely sunset.

There was a good SW wind 10-15mph, which enabled Rick to start the race from the usual flagpole (as opposed to the unusual flagpole) with a long beat down to 3 (about as long as you can get without portage). He then went to A (which I reckon was somewhere near 2), then 4, B (your guess is as good as mine), 5, 6, 7 and back through the start.

Pursuit

14 takers today and no really early starters with the Solos of Steve S and Chris A, the Leaders of Mike N & William and Sally & Mike C and the Radials of Hadey and Joe going off in a starting group.

At the gun, last man away Simon B in his Blaze had come through the fleet to claim first place with Steve S of the starting group hanging on for 2^nd place. The final order was – 1^st Simon (Blaze); 2^nd Steve S (Solo); 3^rd Mike Tr (Laser); 4^th Dean & Nick (Vago); 5^th Ralph (Laser); 6^th Hadey (Radial)  

Handicap

Bill (K1) joined in for the second race so the fleet was up to 15, but not for long as Steve S disappeared on the first lap. Dean & Nick were first back through the start line a minute ahead of Mike Tr and Ralph in 2^nd and 3^rd places and they were only 4 seconds ahead of Mike C & Sally. Hadey getting back to form was next, but only just ahead of Jamie (Laser). Then there was a gap before Simon crossed the line in 7^th place (presumably he had experienced a problem as he is usually way ahead) and he was followed by Mike & William, just 10 seconds ahead of Joe. Next to come through was Jon in his Laser, who is usually a strong wind maestro, so he must have had a problem as well!

Chris A in the surviving Solo crossed in 11^th spot about 30 seconds ahead of Adrian (s/h Vago in this wind – obviously likes to set himself a challenge). Then bringing up the rear of the fleet were Bill and Alistair S (Laser), who follows Reading FC and usually opts for the same sort of position.

Rick was kind to everyone and blew the hooter at the end of the second lap and especially kind to Dean & Nick (but he was on for a pint if he finished the race when they were still ahead!). Ralph and Mike Tr were having their usual ding-dong and Ralph passed Mike to take 2^nd place. Unfortunately for Mike, Jon had sorted himself out gaining seven places and pipping Mike across the line by 3 seconds to snatch 3^rd place. Simon was up two places to finish 5^th pushing Hadey down to 6^th. The only other movers in the right direction were Chris A and Bill who both gained a place.

The final order on the water was 1^st Dean & Nick; 2^nd Ralph; 3^rd Jon; 4^th Mike Tr; 5^th Simon; 6^th Hadey

Nice and sunny this morning, but a cool edge to the wind coming from NNW but veering considerably and between 8-10 mph. James used a Tektona start with the first mark as A (between 5 and 6 close to the buoy line. It was good to see Paul W back on the water and to see Lottie turning out again. Adrian opted for the intricacies of sailing his Vago single handed

Pursuit

There were 13 starters and at the end of the first lap early starter Ron was leading in his Mirror with second away Mike A (Lightning) holding on to 2^nd but being rapidly caught by Jessica (Laser) and Ellen & Newton (RS200). At the gun the final positions were 1^st Jessica (Laser); 2^nd Julian B (D-Zero); 3^rd Ron (Mirror); 4^th Newton & Ellen (RS200); 5^th Mark (Laser); 6^th Richard S (Laser).

Handicap

Julian W decided to rest his new Solo not to mention his old bones and Lottie kindly relinquished her Laser to Oom PaPa, better known to us as Rick (who had been busy trying to sell one of the club’s boats during the Pursuit Race).

First man back across the line was Julian B (D-Zero) with Ellen & Newton (RS 200) about 30 seconds behind him and Jessica about the same distance coming through in 3^rd place.  Next along were the Lasers of Mark, Richard S and William B (Rick was probably in this group too), not far ahead of Chris A (Solo) and Ralph (Laser). Ron (Mirror) crossed in 9^th with Mike C & Sally (Leader) catching him with quite a gap behind them back to Mike A (Lightning) and Rhys (4.7). Behind them were Adrian doing spinnaker exercises and Rich F in his Wanderer.

On the second lap there was no change in the first three, but Ralph had moved up four places to 4^th and Rick was back up to his favourite position of 7^th! Paul W and Rich received the finish gun at the end of this lap.

At the end of the third lap Julian B crossed the line to take victory on the water about one minute ahead of Ellen & Newton. Ralph had passed Jess to take 3^rd place from her and Richard S had got past Mark to take 5^th place. Chris A gained a place up to 7^th by passing Rick, Mike C & Sally passed William B to take 9^th place and Adrian got past Ron.

The order on the water was –

1^st Julian B; 2^nd Ellen & Newton; 3^rd Ralph; 4^th Jessica; 5^th Richard S; 6^th Mark

On corrected time this changes to –

1^st Ellen & Newton; 2^nd Ralph; 3^rd Jessica; 4^th Julian B; 5^th Ron; 6^th Richard S

It was a bit cooler tonight with a brisk West wind 13- 15 mph with stronger gusts coming through.

Karen, Rick and Mike To opted for Radial rigs and Nigel decided to take out a Topper instead of his Laser.

There were 14 starters and Simon B (Blaze) was first back across the line then Ellen and Karen came through close together with Jamie about 20 seconds later and all of these were sailing Lasers. Newton (Solo) crossed in 5^th place just ahead of Dean & Nick (Vago) followed by Ralph, Richard H and Rick in Lasers and grouped closely together. 30 seconds later Paul H (Supernova) and Mike Tr (Laser) crossed the line together battling for 10^th place not far ahead of Mike To in Radial rig Laser and Thomas in a full rig Laser with Nigel bringing up the rear of the fleet in his Topper.

On the second lap Simon had increased his lead to three minutes over Ellen and Karen, but there was no change in the order of the first seven boats. Rick and Mike Tr crossed the line together in joint   8^th, but there were no other movers behind them.

On the third lap there was an unexpected change at the front when Simon retired as he had sailed the wrong course (he’s not the only one who did not know the course!) This obviously moved everyone up a place, but Ralph improved on that by moving up three places to 4^th spot with Newton still 5^th and Rick up two places to 6^th. Mike To also retired and Nigel received the finish gun at the end of the lap.

No change in the order of the first three as they finished the fourth and last lap. Mike Tr made up three places and just pipped Ralph for 4^th place (sweet revenge for last week when Ralph did the same to him!) In moving up to 4^th Mike also passed Rick and Newton and to make matters worse for Rick he was also caught by Dean & Nick and Richard H.

The final order on the water was – 1^st Ellen; 2^nd Karen; 3^rd Jamie; 4^th Mike Tr; 5^th Ralph; 6^th Newton

On corrected time the only change is Newton moving up to 3^rd place pushing the rest down a place.

This was the last race of the series and Jemima in her Opppie was the overall winner with Karen in 2^nd and Newton 3^rd place. Congratulations to them all.

It was slightly overcast tonight with a fresh SW wind about 13 mph. Curtis on duty for the third Wednesday in a row (he’s hoping to get the hang of it soon!) set the first beat to A (past Tektona and nearer to the buoy line), then 9, 4, 2, 5, 7 and back through the start.

Newton was out in Julian’s D-Zero and hoping to match Ellen’s performance of leading from the front when she borrowe3d the D-Zero on Sunday. However, his hopes were dashed by the appearance of Simon B with his flying bedstead – the Blaze.

There was quite a good turn out with 18 starters and as predicted Simon was first back across the line, but Newton was a good second about 20 seconds ahead of Mike Tr (Laser), just ahead of Ralph in another Laser. The Leader of Mike N & Nev crossed in 5^th place with Hugh (Solo – Newton’s usual steed) and Richard H (Laser) not far behind in 6^th and 7^th places. Dean & Nick (Vago) were next long in close company with Paul H in his Supernova and then Dave & Ann (Leader) crossed the line overlapping Rick in his Laser.  Just over 30 seconds later a close group of four came through the line with Jeremy (Laser) leading Mike T (Laser), Sally & Roland L (Leader –  Sally adding yet another male to her increasing list of crewmen –  miss a race at your peril gentlemen, you’ll be over the side before you know it!) and Mike A (Lightning). A minute after that motley crew, Ron turned up in his Mirror, back from his adventures at Abersoch, followed by Jemima (Oppie) and Rich F in his Wanderer.

At the end of the second lap there was no change in the first five, but Dean & Nick had shot up to 6^th place. Rick had passed Dave & Ann to move up to 10^th, Sally & Roland had passed Mike A to move up to 13^th and there was no change in order behind them, but Rich received the gun at the end of the lap.

On the third lap again no change in the first five, but Richard H had moved to 6^th spot by repassing Dean & Nick and also getting past Hugh. There were no other movers and Ron and Jemima both received the gun as they crossed the line.

The fourth lap was the last and Simon had increased his lead to 2 minutes over Newton at the finish gun and Ralph snatched 3^rd place from Mike Tr. Dean & Nick moved up three places to 5^th repassing Richard H and passing Mike & Nev and Hugh. Rick gained another place up to 9^th by passing Paul H.

Sally & Roland also gained a place getting past Mike T.

The final order on the water was- 1^st Simon; 2^nd Newton; 3^rd Ralph; 4^th Mike Tr; 5^th Dean & Nick; 6^th Mike & Nev.

Hot and sunny, but there was hardly any wind. Rick set a box course with 5 as the first mark then down to A, diagonally back up to 6 then down to B and back through the start (got it?).

Only four starters, but with Rick’s wise decision to use a short course three of them actually managed two laps. Monica started in her Europe, but tired of going nowhere, packed in before the end of the first lap. Sally & Nev were out in a Leader and received the gun at the end of their first lap as there was a danger of turning the morning race into an all day affair.

At the end of the first lap Chris H (Comet) led from Hadey in her Radial with Ron (Mirror) bringing up the rear.  On the second lap this order did not change, but on corrected time Ron leapfrogged Hadey.

The final order was -1^st Chris H; 2^nd Ron; 3^rd Hadey

It was very hot and sunny with the temperature forecast to rise to 30 C in the afternoon. Unfortunately, there was only a light wind, nominally 5-7mph from a SE direction, but it went up and down a fair bit and shifted around all over the place. With a series victory in the bag, Newton volunteered to step up and run the race in the absence of a scheduled SOOD. He set a box course with a Committee Boat start and the first mark as A (just past 9 but in the middle of the lake) then 5, 4, B (due East of 4) and back through the start.

Pursuit Race

11 starters, the same as last week, with the lack of wind putting some off and others busy on the Bank Holiday weekend.

At the end of the first lap Chris H (Comet) had caught Ron (Mirror) who started in front of him. Julian W (out in his brand new Solo – nice looking boat) was 3^rd, with Jon (Laser) up to 4^th and Chris A (Solo) 5^th and Peter R (Enterprise) 6^th. Mike A (Radial) came through in 7^th place about 3 minutes ahead of Sally & Nev (Leader) who were just ahead of last starter Adrian (Rooster) and Rick and Lottie in Lasers.

It was slow going up to 5 and a bit of a raft developed as boats tried to round the mark. Sally & Nev coming up from behind spotted an opening and came right through the fleet to move from 8^th up to 2^nd place which they held until the gun with only Chris H ahead of them.

The final order was – 1^st Chris H; 2^nd Sally & Nev; 3^rd Ron; 4^th Jon; 5^th Julian W; 6^th Adrian.

Handicap Race

Julian W sat the second one out so 10 started and first back across the line was Adrian well ahead of Peter R in 2^nd place who in turn was clear of Sally & Nev in 3^rd. Chris H came through in 4^th place with Chris A in 5^th and Jon 6^th. Next along was Ron ahead of Mike A, Rick and Lottie.

The boats were fairly evenly spaced out, so the only shuffles on the second lap were Jon passing Chris A, and Mike A passing Ron. It was much the same on the third lap, but Ron repassed Mike, who along with Rick and Lottie received the gun at the end of the lap.

On the last lap Chris H snatched 3^rd place from Sally & Nev but everyone lese maintained station, so the final order was –

1^st Adrian; 2^nd Peter R; 3^rd Chris H; 4^th Sally & Nev; 5^th Jon; 6^th Chris A

On corrected time the order changes to – 1^st Chris H; 2^nd Sally & Nev; 3^rd Peter R; 4^th Adrian; 5^th Ron; 6^th Chris A

 This was the last race of the Summer Series and the Pursuit Series was won by Newton & Ellen (RS200) with Karen and Jon (Lasers) tied for 2^nd place. The Handicap Series was won by Ellen & Newton with Chris H (Comet) in 2^nd place and Jon in 3^rd place.

Congratulations to all of them.

It was a warm sunny evening with a WSW wind of about 10 mph Curtis set the first mark as A (down past Tektona) then 2, 9, 5, 6, 7 and back through the start.

20 starters tonight and first back through the line was Ellen (sailing Julian B’s Devoti-Zero) and she was already 30 seconds ahead of Ralph (Laser) and Newton (Solo), who was just ahead of Hugh (Laser).  20 seconds later a trio of Lasers crossed the line, Jess, Jamie and Rick, who was 7^th again. Then along came a motley mix of boats, Chris H (Comet), Dean & Nick (Vago), Chris A (Solo), Mike A (Lightning) and Sally & Sam (Leader). Mike T (Laser) was through in 13^th place and behind him Emily (4.7) and Jeremy (Laser) crossed the line together.  A minute later Bob L (Solo) crossed in a lonely 16^th place some five minutes ahead of Phoebe (Oppie), Chris S (Laser) and Olliver (Topper) with Rich F (Pico) bringing up the rear of the fleet.

On the second lap no change with the first two, but Ellen had increased her lead. Newton and Hugh crossed together battling for 3^rd place and there was no change in the 5^th to 10^th placed boats. Sally & Sam had moved up one place by passing Mike A to move to 11^th and Jeremy, Bob L and Chris S also gained one place. Phoebe, Olliver and Rich received the gun at the end of this lap.

At the end of the third lap Ellen and Ralph still led but Hugh had now established himself in a clear 3^rd place and Jess had moved past Newton to 4^th place. Jamie and Rick were still 6^th and 7^th, but Dean & Nick had moved up to 8^th by passing Chris H. There were no other changes in position and Emily and Chris S received the gun at the end of the lap.

The fourth lap was the last lap and Ellen crossed the line four minutes ahead of Ralph to take the victory. The only changes in position were with the double handers as Dean& Nick moved up another place passing Rick and Sally & Sam gained a place by passing Chris A. The final order on the water was -1^st Ellen; 2^nd Ralph; 3^rd Hugh; 4^th Jess; 5^th Newton; 6^th Jamie.

On corrected time this becomes – 1^st Ellen; 2^nd Ralph; 3^rd Newton; 4^th Chris H; 5^th Hugh; 6^th Jess
