Camp sail 29th August
12 August Gillette 19
With the wind in a tricky direction, NE varying 6-10 mph, Bob L used a Tektona start with a first beat back to 8, up to 5, down to 4 then 2 and back through the start.
There were 24 starters and it was good to see two new starters Richard Hobson in a Laser and Comet 587 (no name as yet) There was a familiar 1, 2, 3 at the end of the first lap, Ian C (Supernova), David C (Laser) and Karen (Laser), slightly ahead of Monica (Europe) and Sylvia (Laser) who crossed the line together. There were four Leaders out tonight and Hugh and Hadey (just back from the World Scout Jamboree in Japan) came through in 6th with Neville & Paul back in 14th and Sally & Stuart 17th and Tracey & Barbara 19th. Mike A (Lightning) came through in 7th being chased by Rod and Curtis in Lasers and Julian in his Solo. The other Solo of Chris A was locked in a battle with the Lasers of Chris S, Alistair S, David M and Paula (Radial). Then there was a mini fleet of double handers led by Sally & Stuart with Tracey & Barbara (Leaders) and Angela & Catherine B (Comet Duo) and Craig, Rob & Colum in a Firefly, Dean (Laser) was trying to get free of this battle. At the rear of the fleet Comet 587 was being caught by Amy in her Europe and Richard H was fulfilling his intention to potter along at the back and see how things went.
Although the winds were light there were some really good battles right through the fleet. Ian managed to pull a lead and stayed out in front for the whole of the race but the battle for 2nd place was closely contested by David, Karen and Sylvia. Rod moved up to 5th place but was harried all the way by Curtis in 6th and behind them Chris A and Mike A had a terrific scrap for 7th place which went all the way to the line. Chris S, Alistair S, David M and Paula were also close together and joined by Dean in the latter stages and Sally & Stuart had eased slightly ahead of the other double handers to join this melee. Unfortunately Monica who had been going well in 4th place suddenly capsized on the way down to 2 on the second lap and as it happened so suddenly it looked like a gear failure.
At the end of the fourth lap Angela & Catherine, Comet 587 and Richard received the finish gun and at the end of the fifth lap so did Julian, Dean, Sally & Stuart, Alistair S, Chris S and Amy.
David M and Paula had sailed a good race in company coming through from 15thand 16th on the first lap to finish 10th. and 11th Dean after a dodgy start climbed from 18th to 14th. Rather cruelly Nev & Paul just pipped Hugh and Hadey on the line (by only 1 second – must have been the jet lag kicking in !)) to take the honours in the Leader fleet. Amy after another dodgy start climbed from 24th to 19th.
The final positions on the water were 1st Ian; 2nd David C; 3rd Sylvia; 4th Karen; 5th Rod; 6th Curtis.
On handicap the first three should be safe, but Chris A and Mike A might leapfrog Rod and Curtis.

9th August Summer Series 9
It was a warm sunny morning with a light 5- 8mph SW wind. Newton set a long first beat down to 3, then a run down to 2 and onto to 9, up to 5 on the buoy line then across to the clubhouse and round 7 and back through the start.
18 starters this morning for the Pursuit Race and Karen (Laser) was first back through the start line followed by Paul & Neville (Leader) then the Supernova of Ian C then Peter S (Byte), Mike A (Laser) and Luke (Solo). Then there was a pack of seven Lasers led by Jon then Sylvia, Rod, John H, Steve P, John W and David M. Sally was out in her Comet again and came through in 14th place followed by Eddie B (Laser), Ben H (Topper) John S (Topaz) and Alistair S (Laser).
At the finish gun Ian had taken the lead and Jon had come through to 2nd with Karen 3rd, Paul & Neville 4th and Sylvia up three places to 5th.The only other movers were Rod up one place to 8th and David M up two places.
Final positions were 1st Ian; 2nd Jon; 3rd Karen; 4th Paul & Nev; 5th Sylvia; 6th Mike A
John W and Eddie did not start the Handicap Race so the fleet was down to 16 boats.
At the end of the first lap Ian came through in 1st place with Sylvia 2nd, Karen 3rd, Rod 4th, John H 5th and Jon 6th. Further down the fleet Peter S and Luke were having a good battle and Sally was holding off Alistair S. John C and young Ben were also having a close race and poor David M was bringing up the rear having missed the start line and having to go back to re-round.
After two laps Karen had managed to get past Sylvia to move to 2nd, Mike A had gained three places to 5th and David M had caught and passed John C and Ben. These latter three received the gun at the end of this lap.
Ian crossed the line in 1st place at the end of the third and last lap with the following four boats maintaining position. Paul & Neville and Luke had moved up two places to 6th and 7th respectively. Sally had moved up two places to 9th and Steve P two places to 11th.
Final positions on the water were 1st Ian; 2nd Karen; 3rd Sylvia; 4th Rod; 5th Mike A; 6th Paul & Neville.
On handicap there should be no change in the first three positions.
Thanks to Newton and the OOD Team Ellen, Bob H, Damian and Emily.
05 August Gillette Series 18
It was a lovely sunny evening with light SW wind from about 4 mph up to 8 mph. Dave I set a short course using 5, 9, 8, 6 and back through the start.
There were 24 starters and Newton got a flyer and led from Karen round the first mark but by the end of the lap David C (Laser) was 1st with Newton (Solo) 2nd and Sylvia (Laser) up to 3rd, Karen (Laser) was 4th, Dave L (Laser) 5th and Peter S (Byte) 6th. Further down the fleet Alistair S (Laser) and Paul H (Supernova were having a good battle. David M (Laser) and Mike C (Laser) decided to retire before the end of the lap and after completing the lap Julian (Solo), Angela & Paula (Comet Duo) Chris S (Laser), and William (Topper) joined them.
After two laps the first two boats had retained their positions but Karen had moved up to 3rd and Ian C (Supernova) to 4th with Mike A (Lightning) 5th and Curtis (Laser) 6th.
A number of boats were finished at the end of this lap, Sail No 818 (not sure of the helm as not signed in), Bob L (Solo), Sail No 27796 (again not signed in), Alistair S, Paul H and Rhys (Topper) although this may have been William rather than Rhys – no doubt they will enlighten us !
At the end of the third and last lap Karen crossed the line in 1st place with David 2nd just in front of Newton in 3rd. Ian C was still 4th, Dave L 5th and Curtis 6th.
On handicap Newton will take the win leapfrogging Karen and David with Peter S moving up to 4th, Mike A 5th and Ian 6th.
Thanks to Dave I and the OOD Team Jerry C, Martin W and Nick J.
2nd August Summer Series 8
Well it was a lot pleasanter than pouring rain of last week with a bit of sun and a SE 8-10 mph wind.
Because of the wind direction James P set the start out at No 5 with the first mark as 1, then 4, 2, 3, 9 and back round 5.
There were 24 starters for the Pursuit Race and David C (Laser) was first back through the start line followed by the Lasers of Karen, Richard S, Dave L, Jon, Mark B and at last a boat other than a Laser the Supernova of Ian C. There were only two Solos out this morning and Newton came through in 10th with Chris A 13th. No Leaders at all today so Sally was out in her Comet in 15th place. Towards the back of the fleet the last starter Adrian (Vago) was just catching William in his Topper and Gordon and Pat were having their own battle in the Mirrors. Paul R (Aero) decided to call it a day after one lap because of persistent problems with weed.
The wind held up round most of the course but Marks 1 and 2 were a bit of a problem as the wind died when you got about 5 yards from the marks. At the finish gun David was still leading but remarkably there were no changes in position right down the fleet !
Final positions were 1st, David; 2nd Karen; 3rd Richard S; 4th Dave L; 5th Jon; 6th Mark
Gordon and Pat decided not to contest the Handicap Race, but Mike C started in Paul H’s Laser having tried Paul’s Supernova previously. Ralph & his lad (Feva) also decided to join the fray.
David C was again 1st through the line at the end of the first lap, but this time was followed by Ian in 2nd place and then the Lasers of Dave L, Richard S, Karen and Mark, with Newton 7th in his Solo. Then there were another gaggle of Lasers in 8th to 12th places with Alistair S (fresh back from a sailing holiday) going well in the middle of this group in 10th place. Behind these Adrian was battling with Steve P (Laser) and Chris A was battling with Paul W (Radial) and David M (Laser). Sally was just ahead of Mike C who was trying to get to grips with a slow Laser (at the end of the race he discovered that there was no bung in the transom ! – no wonder he thought Lasers were slow boats). Bringing up the rear of the fleet was the ever persistent William.
After two laps Dave L had taken the lead with Ian still 2nd and Karen 3rd. Newton had gained one place and the other movers were Curtis, Paul W and Steve P up two places, Chris A and Mike C up three places. Sally and William were given the finish gun at the end of this lap.
At the end of the third and last lap Dave L was first across the finish line with Ian and Karen behind him. David C and Newton both gained a place to move up to 4th and 5th respectively. There was a close battle for 7th place with the Lasers of Rod, Mark, Curtis and Mike A approaching the last mark line abreast. Curtis managed to get the inside line on the buoy but just touched rounding and had to do penalty turns and Rod managed to draw ahead to take the 7th spot. There were no other movers (in the right direction), so the final positions on the water were –
1st Dave L; 2nd Ian; 3rd Karen; 4th David C; 5th Newton; 6th Richard S.
On handicap Dave should keep his victory but Newton will move up to 2nd pushing Ian down to 3rd.
Thanks to James P and the OOD Team of Brian and Richard M and Robbie H
29 July Gillette Series Race 17
With the wind veering around and anything from 5 mph to 10 mph, Paul R decided to set an unusual start line using the pin and a rescue boat as a Committee Boat. The first mark was X which was moved from the buoy line to somewhere NW of No 8 just before the start. The next mark was 8, then up to 5, back down to 9 and then up to an Orange buoy positioned between 3 and 4 and then there was a long (boring) run back to 7 and the start line.
There were 23 starters including brave Jemima in her Oppie and the three Toppers of Edward, Joe and William (good to see the young sailors joining in the racing).
At the start a number of boats set off for the buoy line not realising the first mark had been moved !
David C (Laser) was first back through the line followed by the Lasers of Jon and Sylvia, then Ian C (Supernova) and the Lasers of Karen, Dave L and James P. Chris A came through next just in front of Newton, both in Solos with Sally & Stuart (Leader) slightly further back. Jemima decided to retire on this lap, but well done to her for turning out.
By the second lap Ian had moved into the lead and Karen had moved up to 2nd, Newton had moved up two places to 7th. Paul H (Supernova) had got past Sally & Stuart, but Steve S (Laser) had passed both of them. Luke (Radial) was trying to catch Sally & Stuart with Chris S (Laser) and Julian (Solo) trying to catch Luke. Behind them Neville & Anne L (good to see Anne out on the water) in the Leader were having a good battle with Mike A (Lightning). David M (Radial) was plugging along behind them and Angela (Comet Duo) was trying to stay ahead of the Topper fleet.
Angela and the Toppers (sounds like a 70s pop group) received the gun at the end of this lap. In the Topper battle Joe just beat Edward with William in 3rd place.
Ian crossed the finish line in 1st but David and Sylvia (just) managed to get ahead of Karen. The final positions on the water were 1st Ian; 2nd David C; 3rd Sylvia; 4th Karen; 5th Dave L; 6th Newton, but on handicap Newton should take the win with David C taking 2nd pushing Ian down to 3rd.
Thanks to Paul and the OOD Team Mike C, Ellen, Sophie and Clare.
