Summer Series 1 – 26th May 2019

There was a brisk SW wind of about 14-15 mph and Dave L set a first beat to 3, then 2, 5, 8, 7 and back though the start

Pursuit Race

There were 13 starters today and 9 of these were Lasers, although five of these were using radial rigs and Adrian was going the other way by using his Rooster rig!

First man away Chris H (Comet) had been caught by the end of the first lap by Ellen & Newton (RS200), Jess (Radial) and Mike & Sally (Leader) and these three held their position to the gun.

The finishing order was – 1st Ellen & Newton; 2nd Jess; 3rd Mike & Sally; 4th Karen; 5th Julian B; 6th Chris H

Handicap Race

Everyone stayed on for the second race and Julian B (Devoti D-Zero) was first back through the line one minute ahead of Newton & Ellen (RS200) followed by the Lasers of Jon, Karen and Ralph. Adrian (Rooster) was next across the line in 6th place, some 30 seconds ahead of Mike Tr (Laser) and Jess (Radial). Then there was a slight gap back to Mike & Sally (Leader) and Rick (Laser) then bringing up the rear of the fleet were Mike A (Radial), Chris H (Comet) and Cecilia (Radial).

By the end of the second lap Julian and Newton & Ellen were still ahead, but Mike Tr had moved up four places to 3rd place with Ralph up one to 4th place and Adrian up one to 5th. Rick had passed Mike & Sally, but there were no other moves in the right direction!

Cecilia got going after a capsize but received the gun at the end of the lap.

By the end of the last lap the only change in the top six was Adrian passing Ralph to claim 4th place, Mike & Sally repassed Rick and that was the end of the day’s manoeuvres.

The order on the water was – 1st Julian B; 2nd Newton & Ellen; 3rd Mike Tr; 4th Adrian; 5th Ralph; 6th Karen

On corrected time the order becomes – 1st Newton & Ellen; 2nd Mike Tr; 3rd Julian B; 4th Ralph; 5th Jess; 6th Karen

Thanks to Dave L and the OOD Team of Ann L, John H, Nev and Pat G.

Gillette Series 6 – 22nd May 2019

With a SW wind of about 9-10 mph, Steve S set the first mark as 4 then A (roughly near 2 but further in to miss the lee of the trees) then 5, 8, 6, 7 and back through the start.

There were 25 starters and Ellen (Laser) was first back through the start line followed closely by the Lasers of Mark B, Karen and Mike Tr. About a minute later Newton (Solo) crossed the line in 5th place leading the gaggle of Jeremy, Curtis and Joe in Lasers, then Dave & Ann (Leader), Chris H (Comet), Ralph (Laser) Mike C & Sam (Wanderer), Sally & Stuart (Leader). Finally Steve had chance to draw breath for a minute before Rick (Laser) came along in company with Dean & Nick (Vago), Chris A (Solo), Mike T (Laser), Paul H (Laser), Adrian (Vago s/h), Ron (Mirror), Emily (Topper), Nigel (Laser) and Jemima (Oppie) with Chris & Carol (420) bringing up the rear. This lot were virtually line astern and we can thank our lucky stars that someone else (namely Steve and his team) was having to log them across the line!  Mike A (Lightning) did not make it across the line as his mainsheet came adrift.

Ellen still led at the end of the second lap with Karen overtaking Mark and Mike Tr to move up to 2nd place. The next four maintained station, but Ralph moved up two places to 9th and Rick passed Sally & Stuart to move to 13th. Paul H gained two places by passing Chris A and Mike T and further back Nigel also gained two places.

On the third lap Mark B took the lead with Karen still in 2nd and Ellen slipping to 3rd place. Mike Tr, Newton and Jeremy held their places, but Ralph moved up two to 7th by passing Curtis and Joe. Rick had a good lap moving up three places to 10th and Dean & Nick made up four to move to 11th. Paul H and Adrian both gained a place. Jemima and Chris & Carol received the finish gun at the end of the lap.

At the end of the fourth and last lap there was no change in the first six, but Joe had regained two places to finish in 7th place. Mike C & Sam pipped Dave & Ann to take the double handed honours and Chris H got past Dave & Ann. Mike T made up two places by passing Adrian and Nigel. Poor Chris A having sailed all four laps found himself disqualified for sailing the wrong course!

The final order on the water was – 1st Mark B; 2nd Karen; 3rd Ellen; 4th Mike Tr; 5th Newton; 6th Jeremy.

On corrected time the order should be – 1st Mark; 2nd Newton; 3rd Karen; 4th Ellen; 5th Mike Tr; 6th Mike C & Sam

Thanks to Steve S and the OOD team of Ferdinando, Hugh, John H and Rich F.

Spring Series 12 – 19th May 2019

It was a light wind last Sunday and another light wind today about 5 mph coming from the NEish!

Julian B set a fairly short course so the we could see more of everyone, whether that’s a good thing is a matter of opinion.

Pursuit Race

This morning there were 13 starters, one more than last week and that one was probably Dave I, who turns out for a bit of fresh air when the weather is nice.

A bit of a surprise this morning as Ron was caught by Ellen & Newton, but he was 2nd and as usual Chris H was next in 3rd place with Karen a close 4th. The final order was-

1st Ellen & Newton (RS200); 2nd Ron (Mirror); 3rd Chris H (Comet); 4th Karen (Laser); 5th James (Laser); 6th Mike Tr (Laser)

Handicap Race

Dave decided he’d had enough fresh air and fun for one day, but he was replaced by Jewels in her Mirror.

The second race was a four lapper and first back through the line was Newton & Ellen, who obviously had their Weetabix this morning as they had pulled out a minute on 2nd place man James, who in turn had 30 seconds over Ralph (Laser) in 3rd place. Chris H came through in 4th place, just ahead of a close group of boats led by Karen followed by the Lasers of Mark B, Alistair S and Mike Tr. The only Leader out today crossed the line next in 9th place with Mike C & Sam on board, with Rick (Laser) just behind them.  A minute later came the Mirrors of Jewels and Ron followed by Cecilia (Radial).

There was no change with the two leaders at the end of the second lap, but Mike Tr had put the booster on and gained five places to move up to 3rd place. Mike C & Sam made up two places and further back jewels was still ahead of the old man.

On the third lap the first four maintained station, but Karen passed Ralph to move up to 5th and Mark B moved up two places to 7th by getting past Alistair and Mike C & Sam. Further back Ron had just edged in front of Jewels and Cecilia received the gun at the end of the lap.

At the end of the last lap Newton & Ellen kept their lead and crossed the line in 1st place. Chris H managed to take 3rd place from Mike and in the only other change in order Rick came through with a late surge to pass Alistair.

The final order on the water was – 1st Newton & Ellen; 2nd James; 3rd Chris H; 4th Mike Tr; 5th Karen; 6th Ralph

On corrected time the order changes to – 1st Chris H; 2nd Newton & Ellen; 3rd James; 4th Mike Tr; 5th Karen; 6th Ron

Thanks to SOOD Julian B and the OOD Team, who will have to remain nameless as none of their names was recorded on the race sheet!

This were the last races of the 2019 Spring Series, so congratulations to Ron (Mirror) for winning the Pursuit Series and to Chris (Comet) for winning the Handicap Series. bot

Spring Series 11 -12th May2019

Mike N had a very light and variable wind to contend with this morning.

Pursuit Race

There were 12 starters and it was good to see Ben & Lilam (apologies if I have got that name wrong) out on the water in a Laser 2000. First man away Ron (Mirror) repeated his feat of last week and maintained the lead right to the end of the allotted time. Chris H (Comet) who was second away did a similar trick and was still 2nd at the gun!

The final order was –

1st Ron (Mirror); 2nd Chris H (Comet); 3rd Mike Tr (Laser); 4th Ralph (Laser); 5th Chris A (Solo); 6th Mike C & Karen (Leader)

Incidentally Dave & Ann in another Leader were 7th and Nev & Sam in the third Leader were 9th.

Apart from Dave & Ann who appear to be constant companions, it’s getting difficult to keep up with the other Leader crews. Do they throw their car keys into a pile and take pot luck!

Handicap Race

The wind was no better for the second race and although everyone decided to give it another go, it was a one lap affair.

Mike T got away got away from the rest of the fleet and finished three minutes ahead of Adrian (Laser) in 2nd place, but he was only 20 seconds clear of Ralph in 3rd. The two Chrises (or crises?) had a good battle for 4th place with Mike C & Karen and Nev & Sam not far behind them. The final order on the water was –

1st Mike Tr; 2nd Adrian; 3rd Ralph; 4th Chris A; 5th Chris H; 6th Mike C & Karen

On corrected time Mike keeps his victory but the order behind him changes considerably to –

1st Mike Tr; 2nd Chris H; 3rd Chris A; 4th Adsrian; 5th Mike C & Karen; 6th Ron

Thanks to Mike N and the OOD Team of Bob L, Chris M, John H and Roland L. and th

Gillette Series 5 – 15th May 2019

There was a good turnout tonight with 19 starters and first man back through the start was Mike T (Laser) followed by the first woman Karen (Laser) and they kept those positions for all three laps of the race.

On the first lap the whole fleet was quite tightly bunched and Steve S (Solo) came through in 3rd place closely followed by Ed (Laser), Dean & Nick (Vago) and Chris H (Comet). About 30 seconds later Mike Todd (Laser) crossed in 7th place just ahead of Stuart & Sally (Leader), Chris A (Solo) and Jeremy (Laser). Another 30 seconds elapsed and along came Ron (Mirror) in 11th leading another clos group consisting of Nigel (Laser), Adrian (Vago s/h), Mike C & Martin (Wanderer) and Paul H (Laser). Chris & Carol were next across the line in their 420, but unfortunately they were later disqualified for missing a mark (still Alfie their golden retriever was pleased to see them back earlier than expected!) Then one minute later Jemima (Oppie) crossed the line and she was some four minutes ahead of Bill (K1) and Rich F (Wanderer).

On the second lap, no change with the two leaders but Ed crossed the line just ahead of Steve to take 3rd position and Chris H moved past Dean & Nick to move up to 5th. Chris A gained two places passing Sally & Stuart and Mike Todd and Jeremy also got past Sally & Stuart to gain a place. Further back Paul H moved up one place.

By the end of the last lap Steve had regained 3rd place and Dean & Nick moved up two places to finish in 4th spot. There were no other changes in position and the final order on the water was –

1st Mike T; 2nd Karen ; 3rd Steve S; 4th Dean & Nick; 5th Chris H; 6th Ed

On corrected time the order changes to –

1st Jemima; 2nd Ron; 3rd Steve S; 4th Chris H; 5th Mike T; 6th Karen

Thanks to SOOD Simon B and the OOD Team of Ferdinando, Richard H and Patrick C.

Gillette Series 4 – 8th May 2019

Chris H was SOOD again this week and set a course of A, 8, 5, 2, 4, 6, 7, S. I guess there was not much wind as the race was a single lap and Chris’s only comment on the conditions was – WET!

There were 15 starters and the final order on the water was –

1st Karen (Laser); 2nd Dean & Nick (Vago); 3rd Mike T (Laser); 4th Richard H (Laser); 5th Sally & Stuart (Leader); 6th Ron (Mirror).

Paul H was the best of the other Lasers finishing in 7th place and at the back of the fleet Jemima (Oppie) finished ahead of Ed (Oppie) and Emily (Topper)

On corrected time the order becomes –

1st Karen; 2nd Ron; 3rd Dean & Nick; 4th Mike T; 5th Jemima; 6th Richard H

Thanks to SOOD Chris and the OOD Team of Monica, Carlo, Chris A and Richard H.

May Day Pennant – 6th May 2019

Last year May Day was hot and sunny, but this morning there was a cold bite to the wind, which was WNW varying from 8 to 10 mph. Paul R was on duty for the second day in a row, he used a Tektona start with a first mark of A (out near the buoy line) then B (just West of 2), 9, 5, 2, 1 and back through the start.

There were 10 starters including John and Linda’s Wayfarer and Rich Fisher’s Wanderer (good to see some different craft on the water).

Simon B (Blaze) and Julian (D-Zero)  joined battle again with Simon leading from start to finish, but Julian chasing him all the way. On the first lap Ralph (Laser) came through in 3rd place with Alistair S (Laser) about 30 seconds back in 4th, closely followed by Adrian (Vago s/h) in 5th place.  Then it was nearly two minutes before Nev (Comet) and John & Linda (Wayfarer) crossed the line together some way ahead of Mike A (Radial) with Rich (Wanderer) another 30 seconds further back. Finally came the two Mirrors of Ron and Dave P, who enjoyed a good battle all the way through the race.

Ralph retired on the second lap and Adrian got past Alistair to move up to 3rd and this was the only change in position.

On the third and fourth laps there were not any changes in position and Ron and Dave received the gun at the end of the fourth. The fifth lap was similar with no change in the order and the final positions on the water were –

1st Simon; 2nd Julian ; 3rd Adrian; 4th Alistair; 5th Nev; 6th John & Linda.

On corrected time the order becomes –

1st Simon; 2nd Julian B; 3rd Nev; 4th Ron; 5th Alistair; 6th Dave P

Congratulations to Simon on winning the Pennant.

Thanks to Paul and the OOD Team of Bill C, Chris A, Ian S and Marion T

Spring Series 10 – 5th May 2019

The wind was considerably lighter (about 2 – 8 mph from the NW) than yesterday, when the new trainees had to put up with a brisk cold wind. Paul R set the first mark as A (red flag) then 4, 1, 5, 9, 2 and back through the start

Pursuit Race

There were 15 starters and it was good to see Issy making a return to the water. First man away Ron (Mirror) managed to hold on to the lead right to the end of the allotted time. Chris H (Comet) who was second away was still 2nd at the end of the first lap but was caught by Simon B (Blaze) and others.

The final order was –

1st Ron (Mirror); 2nd Simon (Blaze); 3rd Mike T (laser0; 4th Richard S (laser0; 5TH Julian B (D-Zero); 6th Chris H (Comet)

Handicap Race

The wind turned more to the West for the second race, so Paul tweaked the course to A, 4, 2, 9, 5, but finished the race at 9.

Julian (D-Zero) was first back through the line chased by Simon in his Blaze. It was over two minutes before the next man crossed the line, Richard S (Laser) and he was followed by a close bunch with Chris H (Comet) leading Jon (Laser), Rick (Laser), Adrian (Rooster), Mike T (Laser) and Mike & Issy (Leader). A minute later Bill (K1) and Jeremy (Laser) crossed the line battling for 10th spot. Then there was a slight gap back to Chris A (Solo) and Dave & Ann (Leader) with Ron (Mirror) and Rhys (4.7) bringing up the rear of the fleet.

Only one more lap and Simon managed to catch and pass Julian to finish in 1st place with Richard S still secure in 3rd. Mike T and Mike & Issy gained four places to move up to 4th and 5th respectively. Bill retired so everyone behind him moved up a place, but Dave & Ann gained another place by passing Chris A and Ron and Rhys continued their battle at the back of the fleet.

The final order on the water was –

1st Simon; 2nd Julian; 3rd Richard S, 4th Mike T; 5th Mike & Issy; 6th Chris H

On corrected time this should change to –

1st Simon; 2nd Chris H; 3rd Ron; 4th Richard S; 5th Julian; 6th Mike & Issy.

Thanks to Paul and the OOD Team of Nick, Philip M and Robbie H. ffffffff

Gillette Series 3 – 1st May 2019

There was a light wind about 8 mph coming from WSW and Chris H set the first mark as X (out near the buoy line half way between 5 and 6), then 2, 4, 6, 6 and back through the start.

There were 18 starters tonight and first back through the line was Karen (Laser) closely followed by Mike T (Laser). Mike C was out with Nick in the Vago and they came through the line in 3rd place just ahead of Mike Todd (Laser) who was about 30 seconds in front of Chris A (Solo). About a minute later Dave & Ann (Leader) crossed in 6th place not far in front of Sally & Stuart in another Leader. Then there was a close group with Nigel L  (Laser) leading Adrian (Vago s/h), Rick (Laser), Mike A (Lightning) and, Richard H (Laser). Ron ( Mirror) was next across the line followed by Paul H (Laser) followed by Jemima (Oppie), Sam (Radial), Ed (Oppie) and Emily (Topper. After Ron had crossed the line everyone behind him received the finish gun, which was lucky for them as the wind began to drop rapidly.

On the second lap Mike T passed Karen to cross the line in 1st place with Mike C & Nick still in 3rd, behind the front three everyone began to struggle as the wind disappeared. Chris A just managed to ease away going down to 6, but behind him a slow bunch was forming with poor Nigel and Rick slipping off the back.

The final order on the water was –

1st Mike T; 2nd Karen; 3rd Mike C & Nick; 4th Chris A; 5th Adrian; 6th Mike A.

On corrected time the order becomes –

1st Mike T; 2nd Jemima; 3rd Ed; 4th Karen; 5th Mike C & Nick; 6th Ron
