FROSTBITE 3

A light breeze saw 23 boats happily rigging with the prospect of more wind to come……Steve and his almost full team set a very interesting course using most of the lake Xs, 5s, 9s, 3s, 4s, 8p, 6s, 7s, S. Will made a port on end start which saw him 3rd at the first mark, while Ian, in his Supanova went straight into the lead and steadily drew away from the rest of the fleet. But for many others, the race was quite eventful……Chris and Karen had a good race swapping places in their Lasers, but when the wind got up on the last lap, Chris got ahead.

Andrew managed a dry capsize, almost unnoticed, between 5 & 9, when his main sheet caught on his transom and lost a couple of places – the usual hazard with Laser sailing!!

Poor Mike lost his tiller at 8, going round in circles for a bit and putting him firmly ‘down the pan’ – bad luck Mike!

All the while the wind was increasing, but Hadey, in Newton’s Laser this week with a 4.7 sail, managed the increasing winds well, overtaking Hugh and Peter in their Bytes, on the last lap, only to capsize after the finish and needing a little help to get ashore – but Hadey, that’s amazing keep it up!!

At some point in the race Dean in his Solo T boned Chris’ Solo…. a large crunch followed by many apologies….. damage / insurance claim??!!

Jon stayed safely ashore ‘playing’ with his Solo mast. in an attempt to improve his boat speed…..no new sail yet……???

Finishing places, 1st Ian, 2nd Chris and 3rd Karen. Mutterings were heard in the dingy park that Will in his Solo won on handicap…??? and he had a video camera on his transom…..we wonder what action, infringements he recorded…..???watch this space…..!!!!

Bev stepped in again, just popping down to see how Hadey was doing, she rushed to the galley to thaw out blocks of soup, open tins and cook some rolls – poor Steve was 1 short and therefore had no one to spare to make soup for some 30 cold sailors to enjoy, whilst dissecting the race in the warmth of the clubhouse………

WORK PARTY

The new Bosun, Don did a good job in getting quite a number of people to the club on Sat am. Curtis arrived with a trailer load of scalpings which went a long way to filling most of the pot holes along the drive. The surplus was used to start shoring up the badly eroded bank below the deck area.

The weed blown onto the slipways was cleared – the pyromaniacs had a huge fire, clearing all the branches that littered the grass areas – a good place to be on a chilly day!

Inside, windows were cleaned, hoovering, mopping and general tidying up was done.

Thank you to everyone who came and gave a hand – what about those who have not been seen at a work party this year? Will they be able to renew their membership next year????

FROSTBITE 2

Another windless day greeted the 10 sailors with the forecast for 4/6 mph not in evidence, The SOOD, Glen was a bit short of helpers, so Paul ‘stepped in’ and set a short course which would cover any wind direction, 5p,8p,xp,6s,7s,S.

Curtis made the perfect port tack start in the middle of the line, with Hadey in Karen’s Laser and 4.7 sail close behind, very impressive Hadey – while Karen crewed Newton in his Laser 2000, Sally helmed Nev’s Leader with Nev crewing….not sure how that came about?? and big Adrian went for his big sail.

Everyone was a little ‘line shy,’ so no recalls and poor Sally and Nev got becalmed with the 9 other boats sailing through them…..

It proved to be a slow drift, with Curtis needing to tack to make X mark and losing 3 places – bad luck Curtis. Adrian took the lead for a while, but Peter in true fashion in light airs took the lead.

Jon tried his luck in his Ent….no new Solo sail yet….?? As usual the wind picked up towards the end of the race, and it appeared to the Jolly Sailor that Hadey finished ahead of Newton? Very impressive!

Finishing places 1st Peter, 2nd Dave, 3rd Adrian.

We had wonderful choice of soups, homemade by Julie, really scrummy….

DON’T FORGET AGM THIS THURS 7PM and WORK PARTY NEXT SAT 0930 onwards.

First Frostbite

Well what a turn out on a chilly, sunless morning! 26 boats took to the water, including young Will, up from Brighton to join us for the winter – welcome back Will.

Bob, the SOOD set a good course from Tektona 6s,8s,9p,2s,4s,S, with a port biased, start line almost to the bouy line, where a lot of shouting was heard as the gun went. Nevertheless Paul in his Europe chose the Tektona end and was well in contention at the first mark.

The winds were variable especially around 6 with some close racing as some sailors caught lucky puffs.

Poor Dave missed going through the start line, on the 4th lap, following a lift close to the bouy line, and had to go back – Monica had kindly shouted to him after she had nearly done the same – thanks to Mike, she bore away to go through the line.

Both Paul and Chris had to do turns for some infringements. Poor Jon in his solo trailing towards the back end of the fleet was heard to say over the delicious soup, provided by Barbara in the club house after the race, that he needs a new sail…..will we be seeing him back in contention at the front of the fleet again soon?

Finishing places were 1st Dave, 2nd Karen and 3rd Chris.

Last Cobley

With the prospect of a ‘no wind’ sail it was surprising to see 18 boats rigging to get on the water……..last chance for points for the Cobley??

Ken and his almost full team set a short course of 6p,5p,9s,4s,S, in anticipation that the fleet would have trouble even getting to the first mark!!

Hadey was off first in her Pico, followed by Hugh in his Byte, then Mike in his solo, Peter in his Ent, then the horde of Lasers, with Steve in his 505 waiting for 31 to sound.

Poor Dave was over at the start though he swiftly climbed up the fleet again. Roland managed to miss going through the start line on the 2nd lap and lost 6 places!! The wind picked up nicely with no one actually getting becalmed…there was some place changing but Peter came in first…..his weather…..followed by Dave 2nd and Mike 3rd.

The OOD team were treated to fresh coffee and Bev had made tomato soup for the chilled racers.

NEXT WEEK 1ST FROSTBITE – 1 HOUR RACE – START 1100.

NOVEMBER CUP

The glorious sunny day saw 23 boats take to the water after 3 minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday at 1105. The SOOD Karen enlisted the help of Nev and Sally, forsaking their sail in the Leader, to enable her to run the race – also Suki, Sophie and Roland helped out, while Bev retired to the galley to make soup and rolls after the race.

It was a good steady breeze and everyone seemed to be enjoying their sail.

Places on the water, 1st David, 2nd Chris, 3rd Jon.

Last Cobley next Sunday, the 17th Nov

Pink Fleet – Saturday 9th November

Torrential, rain, strong, winds, huge waves………was this the Southern Ocean…? no, Monica, it was a Pink Day at Reading Sailing Club..!!!

On the start line were James, John and William in, on, hanging along a Topper, Louise in a kayak, Mike in a canoe, with only a single paddle – poor Mike, but what a sport – and Steve in his 505, with sails!!!

Getting around the course, 5s,Xs,7p, by any means possible, fair or foul, proved quite a mission – helped / hindered by Ken and M in the power boat creating waves from time to time!!!

At one stage James looked like a water skier – wrong bit of water James….

The usual disqualifications followed – Steve for having extra insulation in the form of a beard…..James, John and William, for just having too much fun…..Mike for only having a single paddle….

But the outstanding winner was Louise, winning her first Pink Fleet cup, well done Louise and well done to everyone for having so much fun on an otherwise dreary Saturday – fortified by a superb breakfast cooked by Barbara.

NEXT PINK DAY IS DEC 14 TH, THE XMAS PARTY – with a visit from Santa with prizes for the best decorated boat. There’s no breakfast, racing at 1100 and Xmas lunch at 1300 approx. followed by a quiz. Numbers limited, so sign up with Monica asap.

Cobley 9. Sunday 20th October

Only 13 boats were being rigged this morning was this due to the thunder and lightning ??????? The forecast was strengthing winds . Between force 4 or 6 later. The laser sailors had no problem deciding what sail to use. That's if the remembered to pack it in their cars. Adrian didn't have this problem.

Adrian was the S.O.O.D. today and he had his full compliment of team. Zuki was manning a patrol boat with Sophie assisting her. Well done Zuki for your help today. Two boats required their help , the gusts were quite testing at times.

Rowland started at he meant to go on, what did he has for breakfast? Was he struck by lightning and the extra energy resulted him storming into a huge lead!

Final positions are :

1st. Rowland. 2nd. Newton 3rd. David

Cobley

13/10/13 Cobley. 8

The Jolly Sailor had a taste of winter this morning. it was cold and wet as 12 brave (daft) souls took to the water in 10 knots of north westerly breeze and gusting and horizontal rain.

Keith and his team of ODs cleverly arranged the course so that, after the starting sequence, they could retire to the shelter of the deck and observe the race at a safe distance.

With the wind forecast set to increase, many of the Laser sailors were sporting Radial rigs and it was definitely dry-suit season.

In addition to the usual clutch of Lasers, there were a few two handers out including Dave and son a little eager on the start line in his Wayfarer, Haidey with her new crew Sally in her Pico and Newton with Roz in their Laser 2000.

There was one retirement early on when Chris Andrews  lost the rudder from his Solo. time to call out the club diver to retrieve it maybe? Some were to heard to speculate that he might have done this on purpose as an excuse to finish the race and escape to the warmth of the club house.
Five fast laps later, the top three were jostling for first place. Karen was in the lead with 45 seconds to go at buoy no. 6, when a sudden gust knocked her over, although she was quick to right the Laser, she lost two places. Rowland took first place, with Richard nudging Karen into third place.

Soup and rolls, provided by Wendy from the OD team, were gratefully received.
