30 July Gillette Series Race 15

A lovely evening with a light NW wind and 28 starters, the most this year, which kept Steve S and his team very busy.
It was great to see so many young sailors joining us for the fifteenth race in the Gillette series and before the start Karen duly warned all the adult sailors not to bully the youngsters !
The start line was quite crowded with a short beat up to X near the orange buoy line.
Ian C (Supernova) got away well and had pulled out a small gap at the end of the first lap, followed by Karen, Newton, Dave L, all in Lasers, then Julian (Solo) and then Rod Barber in his Laser. Rod was hotly pursued by Nev & Paul R (Leader) in close company with Curtis (Laser).
In the middle of the fleet there was a close battle between Chris A (Solo), Mike T (Laser), Sally & Stuart (Leader), Tracey & Craig (Leader), Dean and Paul H, both in Lasers and Mike A (Lightning). It was good to see Chris & Carol (Sport 14) and Ian Stewart (RS Vision) back on the water and enjoying a tussle with Hugh (Byte) and Hadey (4.7).
The first of the Toppers was Joe followed by William P, then Jess (Laser), Rhys and Edward in Oppies and Holly in another Topper. Tangled up with them and enjoying their company was Chris S (Laser), Paul B (Laser 2) and John H (Comet).
Ian C kept his lead throughout the race and the five boats behind him also retained their positions. Nev & Paul R kept swopping places with Curtis and they crossed the finish line together. Mike T managed to pull away from the middle of the fleet pack and Sally & Stuart came out top of that midfield pack.  Hugh won the battle of the next group with Hadey and Ian S finishing virtually together with Chris & Carol not far behind.
The leading Topper at the end of the race was William followed by Joe, but Steve S had sensibly finished Holly and the Oppies of Rhys and Edward a lap earlier.
The final placings were 1st Ian C, 2nd Karen, 3rd Newton, 4th Dave L, but Julian will push Dave out of 4th on handicap.
Well done to all the young sailors who joined in the race. Come along again it’s really good to have you with us.

27 July Summer Series Race 7

Richard S set a first leg to No 5 from a Tektona start line, which was the same as the first mark last Sunday, but with a different angled start line ! The wind was NNE 0- 8 mph and veering round, some laps it was a struggle to get round No 6 at one end of the lake and then a struggle to get round No 3 at t’other end of the lake. It was like sailing in a very very slow moving cyclone!
We had another interesting starting tactic this week when James motored down the start line on port tack shouting “starboard”. It seemed to work as no-one hit him and he got away well!
At the end of the first lap Newton & Roz (Laser 2000) came through in 1st, followed by Ian (Supernova), Peter (Enterprise), Karen and David C (Lasers), then Nev & Mike (Leader) and James P and John W (Lasers). There was then a bit of gap to Chris A (Solo) and Dave L and Mike A (Lasers), then there was another gap to Sally & Stuart (Leader) and Dave I (Laser).
Further back there was yet another group led by Mike C (Solo) closely followed by Eddie (Laser), Hadey (4.7) and Chris M (Laser). The fleet seemed to be dispersed into discrete groups apart from Paul D (Radial) and John C (Topaz) who were enjoying the scenery at the back of the fleet. To be fair Paul has only just taken up the game and John C has had enquiries from several nautical museums about his boat !

On the second lap the six leading boats were still together in pretty well the same order, but James P had slipped down to 13th, Dave L moved up to 7th and Dave I moved up two places to 11th.
By the third lap Ian had nudged in front of Peter pushing Newton & Roz down to 3rd.  The rest of the fleet were holding station apart from Sally & Stuart, Eddie and John C who had enough of the vagaries of the wind (never go to sea on baked beans!) and expired.

The fourth and last lap saw an inspired Peter zip through to take 1st place followed by Ian in 2nd and Newton & Roz in 3rd place. A little way back, alarm and despondency struck the following group of Nev & Mike, Dave L, David C and Karen, as they drifted toward No 3 looking back to see Chris A and Mike A roaring down on them. Obviously Chris and Mike were hoping that they would go straight through the pack and be first round the mark, but alas as they hit the back of the group they too came to rest!  In the ensuing raft around the mark Karen and Mike infringed and had to do penalty turns, which make you dizzy but don’t make you laugh (unlike comic turns). Nev & Mike came best out of this melee and finished 4th with Dave L 5th,David C 6th  and Karen 7th, but alas for the Lasers, the Solos of Chris A and Mike C were close enough to snatch 5th and 6th places on handicap.
It is likely that on handicap Karen will be in 9th place, which is quite momentous as her previous lowest placing this year was 5th , it’s just a pity that we have discards !

23 July Gillette Series Race 14

With the wind in a tricky direction, ENE about 8-10 mph, (although it went up and down a fair bit during the race) Newton set an interesting start line using one of the orange buoy line mooring posts and the ODM with a beat down to X (somewhere in the middle going towards No 7).
Kerris (Pico), one of our Pirates had bravely decided to join the racing, but one of her pit crew let her down by leaving the bung out of the transom (or it may have been sabotage by a fellow competitor !) As the Pico started to fill with water she wisely headed for a Safety Boat and was given a lift back to the bank with the Pico in tow. Don’t be discouraged Kerris, it happens to all of us at sometime.
David C (Laser) came through at the end of the first lap with a useful lead over Julian (Solo), who was closely followed by Dave L (Laser). There was then a slight gap to Monica (Europe) 4th and after her came Nev & Mike (Leader) neck and neck with Chris A (Solo).
Mike T (Laser) was between this group and the following group of Mike C (Solo), Curtis (Laser), Paul H (Supernova), Paula (Radial), Hugh & Dean (Sport 14), Mike A (Lightning) and Hadey (4.7). This latter group enjoyed a really good battle throughout the race trading places all the time, with the exception of Curtis who set out after the leaders leaving the rest to play.
Talking of Leaders, there were three out tonight, Nev & Mike had got away from the other two but Tracey & Amy were really close to Sally & Bob right until the end of the race, when Sally managed to nip past Tracey virtually on the line. Initially Craig (Comet ET) was also part of this battle but fell back slightly on the third lap.
At the end of the second lap the first four were the same but Nev & Mike had moved up to 5th and Curtis up to 6th, but the prime mover was Dave I (Laser) who had stormed through to 10th from 18th place on the first lap. Chris S (Laser) and Nick J (Laser continued to have their own battle at the back of the fleet.
Monica decided to leave it to the boys, so at the end of the third lap the three leaders were holding position but the next three boats had shuffled up a place courtesy of Monica. Dave I had moved up another two places to 8th but behind him it was in the lap of the gods as to who was in front of who !
The fourth and last lap saw Dave L nip past Julian to take 2nd place on the water with Curtis coming in 4th . In the middle of the fleet pack, Mike A just pipped Mike C right on the line but then boarded the Committee Boat, fortunately for him he had officially finished at this point!
The final places on the water were 1st David C, 2nd David L, 3rd Julian, 4th Curtis.  However on handicap it looks like Julian 2nd with Mike & Nev 3rd pushing Dave L to 4th and Chris A pushing Curtis down to 6th.

RSC Boat Park: Unidentified Boats

Reading Sailing Club – Unidentified Boats in Boat Park

Following a recent boat park audit we have not been able to identify the owners of a number of boats in the Reading Sailing Club Boat Park.

We would greatly appreciate if the owners of the boats in the link below would contact the Boat Park Captain at the primrose.family@yahoo.co.uk as soon as possible, or any of the other RSC committee members. Failure to do so within the next 28 days risks proceedings leading to the sale or disposal of the boat under the RSC club constitution and/or the 1977 Torts Act.

Notices have also been attached to boats in question.

The RSC committee would also like to remind all members that the club rules requires a valid boat park sticker which includes the member’s name to be clearly displayed on any boat left in the RSC boat park. In addition, boat insurance will typically require boats and trailers left in boat parks to be clearly labelled with the owner’s name. Separately to the boats in the attachment, there are a large number of members’ boats who are still not displaying their 2014 boat park sticker.

20 July Summer Series Race 6

20 July Summer Series Race 6
Peter R set a first leg down to No 5 from a Tektona start line, because the wind veered round after the course was set this was not actually a beat. The wind was a light NW about 6 mph.
Newton & Ellen (Laser 2000) and Ian C (Supernova) adopted an unusual and slightly risky strategy of coming back to the start line on starboard from the wrong side of the line and then tacking round to start. Did not realise that this was a legitimate manoeuvre, but it certainly worked as Ian led round the first mark.
At the end of the first lap Ian led followed by Karen (Laser) then Dave L (Laser). Dave I (Laser) was going well in 4th place, with Newton & Ellen 5th and Curtis (Laser) 6th.
Chris A (Solo) was on his own in 8th place with Nev & Mike (Leader) chasing him.
Further down the fleet Monica (Europe) was battling with the Lasers of James P and Phil A.
The next four boats were really close with Mike C (Solo) just heading Adrian (Vago), Hugh (Byte) and Eddie B (Laser). Bringing up the rear were Sally & Stuart (Leader), Paul W (Radial) and Chris M (Laser).

As the wind was very light and the weed was very thick there was only time for two laps and Eddie decide not to bother with the second lap at all.
The three leaders came through the finish line in the same order but Newton & Ellen had managed to get past Dave I into 4th place. Monica had moved up to 8th from 11th and Mike C finished almost alongside having moved up to 9th from 13th. Adrian was the other winner on the last lap moving up to 10th from 14th. Most others held station in their first lap positions but Chris A and Mike & Nev were the lead weights dropping down to 13th and 14th respectively.
The final placings on the water were 1st Ian, 2nd Karen, 3rd Dave L, but Karen was probably close enough to Ian to take the honours on handicap.

Please note that the previous race report should have been Gillette Series Race 13 not 12 !

16 July Gillette Series 12

As Dave L, SOOD, put on the race sheet it was warm, windy and weedy !
Probably about a 9-10 mph westerly with a beat up to No 5 for the first leg. Curtis got a cracking start and led at the end of the first lap with Karen 2nd, Dave C 3rd and Newton 4th, all in Lasers, with Monica in her Europe 5th and Steve S, Solo, 6th.
At the end of the second lap, the first five were in the same order but Simon B had edged in front of Steve S. Behind these there was a really tight battle led by Sally & Stuart, Leader, but very closely followed by Andrew B, Laser; Paul R, Europe and Steve & Lynne in the 505.
By the end of the third lap Karen and Dave C had managed to get past Curtis with Newton in a safe 4th place. Monica had retired, which was a pity as she had been in a steady 5th place and probably beating boats ahead of her on handicap. There was still less than one minute between 5th place Andy B and 10th place Sally & Stuart and there was a good scrap behind this group between Chris A,  Solo; Mike T, Laser and Mike A, Lightning.
Julian, Solo, who had been going really well in recent weeks, was part of this battle until he went for a swim halfway through the lap. Apparently he had a problem with his rudder and then his toe strap broke. Not sure if he went in the water as a result of the breakage or he just tossed himself over the side in despair!
Dean, Laser, was ploughing a lonely furrow with Paul H, Supernova; Phil M, Solo and Angela & Paula, Comet Duo, battling behind him. Further back were three men in a boat (another Leader) manned by Rob, Craig & Calm. These were followed by Chris S in his newly acquired Laser (good to see you back on the water Chris) who was having his own battle with Nick J, Laser and Tracey T in her Comet ET.
At the end of the fifth and final lap, the first four were the same, but Steve and Lynne had moved up to 5th pushing Andy down to 6th with Simon B moving up to 7th.
The final placings on the water were 1st Karen, 2nd Dave C, 3rd Curtis and these should remain unchanged on handicap. Curtis seems to have moved up a gear and is now playing with the big boys and girls at the front of the fleet (big as in performance not big as in build!)
However it is likely that Steve S and Sally & Stuart will leapfrog the three boats ahead of them on the water, when the handicaps are applied.

MARQUEE AT RSC on 17th July

Just a polite notice to warn members that there will be a large marquee on the lawns at the sailing club which is being erected on Thursday 17th July for the 60th Anniversary Party Celebrations on Saturday 19th. The marquee will be taken down on the morning of the 20th July.

If you are around on the 17th between 6.30pm and 7.00pm we would be very pleased to have some extra helpers to help with the marquee.

13 July Summer Series Race 5

13 July Summer Series Race 5
A lovely morning for a sail with fresh West wind 8-10 mph. John W set a beat down to No 4 and 20 boats set out from the start.
Mike A, Laser, decided to miss out the first mark and sailed down to No 3 until Curtis, Laser, kindly pointed out the error of his ways and Mike turned round and went back to 4 !
There was close racing throughout the fleet and Karen, Laser, led through on the first lap with Richard S, Laser, 2nd; Ian C, Supernova, 3rd and Curtis 4th but closely pursued by Steve S in his Solo, Monica, Europe, Newton & Bob L, Laser 2000 and Peter R in his Enterprise.
Further down the fleet, Chris Mitchell, Laser, couldn’t quite squeeze inside Dave I, Radial, at No 2 and had to gybe round and come back for a second go! Eddie B, Laser, and Pat, Mirror, packed in after the first lap.
On the second lap James P, Laser, followed Mike’s lead (never a wise thing to do) and missed No 4 out sailing straight done to No 3 then returning to 4 again. At the end of this second lap Ian C had come to the front with Richard nipping past Karen and Curtis still in 4th, Steve S in 5th, but Peter had got past Monica and Newton & Bob.  Mike A, Adrian, Vago, James P and Dave I were having a good battle as were Hadey, 4.7, and Paul W, Radial.
After three laps, Karen had regained 2nd place but otherwise the first five boats were the same. Newton & Bob had moved up a place to 6th and Rod B, Laser, had come through to 7th.
On the fourth lap the first four boats kept position, but Rod moved up another place to 5th pushing Steve down to 6th and Monica made up two places to 7th. Monica, Newton & Bob and Peter had a really close tussle throughout the race, Monica and Peter got particularly close at No 8 on the last lap and exchanged the usual pleasantries. Further down Adrian got the better of James P and Phil A, Laser, had caught and passed Dave I
Coming into the jetty at the end of the race Bob stepped off the Laser 2000 but unfortunately did not make the jetty and finished up in the drink. Newton denied bearing away just as Bob stepped off!
The final placings on the water were 1st Ian C, Supernova; 2nd Karen, Laser, 3rd Richard S, Laser.
Curtis finished 4th on the water but it is likely that Steve and Monica will squeeze past him on handicap.
