29/02/12 Frostbite 8

The O.O.D. s of the day were out in force today. Were there going to be more O.O.D. s than sailors??? Well due to the lack of wind , I think it was a possibility.  
 
 Slowly 12 sailors started to rig their boats, the S.O.O.D. planned a simple but challenging course , a triangular one which was encased what wind there was! The start line was a bit confusing to one of our sailors.    11 boats sailing up and down the line and 1 Enterprise sailing up and down his own line.  Did Peter know something the rest of the fleet didn’t ????   No he didn’t ,when Peter realised his mistake he had 30 seconds to reach the real start line.  It was kind of Adrian to Peter know.
 
So all 12 boats crossed the start line , the first buoy was X  . The constantly changing wind made it a very testing first leg.  Chris ,Adrian and Mark made it round the first buoy closely followed by Peter and Sylvia ( see photos) .The next leg was a dead run.  The only ripples on the water was caused by the passing ducks! 
 
Chris , Adrian and Mark held their positions throughout the race but the chasing pack were catching up fast.    Fortunately the O.O.D s put the sailors out of their misery and finished the race.

Frostbite 7 22/01/12

 
 
The Jolly Sailor needed a lie down before I started the race report , so I apologise for the late report.   15 boats started the race , only 6 finished .  The S.O.O.D. had no problem recruiting  members to run the petrol boats , only problem they couldn’t start one of them.  Would the race be abandoned before it even started??????  Finally the petrol lead was fixed and as the wind increase to force 5 they needed both boats.   The course was 5, 9, 4, 1, 6,7.  Will Loy in his Solo showed the sailors how to race and he never even got wet!    Poor Tracey was the first to take an early bath.  I think she wanted to check the bottom of the boat.  It was a rare sight to see Jon having trouble. At one point he was sat on his boat like he was on a horse!  Never seen that before Jon!    So whilst the rescue boat was helping Jon , Mike decided to lend a hand too. Unfortunately he decided to sail in the trees and got stuck! Well done Mike!!!!!!!     The sailors were now getting to grips with the race ,but the Rowland did a spectacular capsize and a four letter word exploded from his lips!  He apologised for his outburst later with a smile on his face!
 
 
Will stayed ahead through out the race and took first place , followed by  Steve, then 3rd place Dave and Dave.

Frostbite 22nd Jan – Racing Report

Course 4P 9S 3P 1P 6S S

There were some difficult decisions being made before the race today.  What sail, whether to reef, whether to sail at all?  A couple of the two handers swapped their female crew members for men.  As it turned out, both ladies made excellent decisions – I'm not sure how their replacements felt about their cold baths.

Only the hardy – or foolish – decided to brave the elements, and a much smaller fleet than in recent weeks took to the lake.  One or two reluctant sailors made the decision to man the safety boats, and weren't we all glad that they did!

Of the 14 boats that set out, only three managed to stay dry.  The rescue boats were busy from the start to the end of the race. 

The two toppers were the first to retire, Hugh only managed 20 seconds before equipment failure, and Tracey didn't make it around the first buoy before having to be rescued. Mark overcame his aversion to Toppers to sail back to the shore (the Jolly Sailor thinks he secretly wanted to take a Topper out in the first place).

The remainder of the race was a blur of capsize and speed.  Will, in his Solo, was in his element and took first.  Steve, in his Laser, stayed dry and came second.  The third boat over the the line was the Daves in the Wayfarer.

Frostbite 15th Jan – Racing Report

Course: 6s 7s 4p S

Eddie, the OOD, was delayed from setting the course due to a lack of wind and also problems with the rescue boat engines, which resulted in one rescue boat towing the other out to the start at Tektona.

The 22 strong fleet struggled to get out to the start line, and were only then able to see the course.  Steve made an excellent start, but some boats were not so quick to get started.

A couple of boats had problems with the Start line on the first lap – the Leader had to go around again, and the byte struggled to get going again when he changed direction to miss it.

The Laser 2000 and the Leader showed off their spinnaekers, the Leader had a bit of a problem getting theirs up, but Neville managed to rerig in the middle of the race.

Rowland was ahead after the first lap, but David took the lead by the second lap and held the lead for the remainder of the very close race.

Final positions were 1st David C, 2nd Rowland
