Spring 8 – Racing Report

What was the shining thing in the sky? Yes the sun was shining! The wind picked up to a nice force 3. Ian was the S.O.O.D. The start was from the shore to the outer distance marker and had a heavy port bias. Who was going to risk it? Hugh was the first boat to start. He was determined to stretch his lead as much as possible. The S.O.O.D. was relieved when the lasers were under way. Mark started from the port end and had a good start in his new boat. Monica was the first casualty in her Europe. Her tiller extension connection was starting to break up. She thought she had better retire before disaster!

One hour into the race and the sailors were starting to feel tired. Mistakes were starting to occur. First one for an early bath was Peter in his new laser!  Buoy number 4 wasn’t going to take any prisoners, Peter in his Enterprise was starting to struggle. He got a strong gust and it hit his boat just at the wrong moment and he was sent into the water together with Curtis!

Four boats were fighting for third place, at one point they were hitting each other like battling tops! Richard came off the loser!

Final positions were. 1st. Chris. 2nd. Mark. 3rd. Dave.

May Pink Day, Pirates and Open Day

Pink Day dawned clear and sunny with a good breeze. Soon after 0900 the club was humming with activity – people busily rigging all the club picos, others munching delicious bacon rolls – thanks to Paul, Jan and Elaine. After a briefing from Ken the 30 boats were quickly on the water sailing out to Tektona for the start. The course was interesting with 3 gybe marks…..nice one Ken!! The standard of sailing was very high, especially form the newly trained….we really needed 5 cups as there were so many ‘winners..’ But the Pink Fleet cup went to young Jo, well done Jo, great sailing. Everyone coped very well in the gusty, shifty winds, with Ken giving a little help from the support boat. It was a great morning with lots of new faces, the usual oldies and string of disqualifications!! But volunteers for clearing up in the galley were a bit short – so guys please can we have help after the race next time….we are all volunteers….
Pirates Afternoon.
Gary had his usual briefing by the log with lots of the regular Pirates, swelled in numbers by some new faces and some little ones, Jemima and Tane both 4 yrs old…everyone was paired up and given a number and off they went.  The Pirate fleet enjoyed some big water sailing, with Gary providing help for those who were struggling.  When it was time to come in, the older Pirates organised a game sailing around a course with a team member valiently trying to stand on a surf board towed behind.  Several kyakers kept a close eye on their ‘babies’ – good to see Kate on the water helping towing boats back to shore.

Gillette 2

Yet another WOW at RSC!!
The Gillette series, Wednesday evening racing, has got off to an amazing start with sailor numbers steadily increasing – 16 boats on the water last week, despite the gusty winds, rain and cold!! The after race supper organised by Sally and her team is proving a great success, with 19 people enjoying Geesje’ spagetti bolognaise in the club house after the race….some non racers enjoying supper as well!! The racing was good as well – so book supper with Sally and ‘give it a go.’

May Day Pennant – Racing Report

Dave P and his team set an excellent course despite the port bias on the start line and sent the 13 boats off to X, near 1 in the ‘not much wind’ area of the lake, causing a mass arrival at the first mark and some penalty turns!!!
The fluky winds came and went while the rain just kept coming – poor ood team looked very bedraggled……there was some close racing but Chris stormed away into the lead, having been ‘dogged’ by Steve for the first couple of laps. Both Lynne, Steve and Adrian managed to fly their kites for a bit on some of the legs giving some colour to an otherwise dreary day.
Despite the 1100 start, Roger was late again, but caught a couple of the ‘tailend charlies’ and completed the hour long race.
For final placings, see the results page.

Don’t forget Pink Day, Pirates and Open Day on Saturday – the club will be buzzing!

6th May Spring Series.

The forecast was for winds gusting 25 miles an hour!   Were we going to have an eventful race or had Metcheck got it wrong?  Peter Rose was the A.O.O.D.  , and you could see by the look in his eye you knew he was going to start on time!   Two of the regular sailors, who will be nameless should of  known better and make sure they have plenty of time to reach the start line!                                                                                                                                                                                        So Hugh set the pace in his  Topper,  closely followed by Monica and Jon in his Solo.   20 seconds to go for the start of the Laser mob and David managed to reach the start line and find a gap start the race in a good position.        During the race the Jolly Sailor noticed Ken was on his hands and knees, was he doing a quick prayer for some decent wind did he slip up? Unfortunately it was the latter and the end result was a bloody nose and still no wind.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The results were   1st.  Steve.       2nd.  Chris.   3rd.   David.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Remember its Pink Day next Saturday. So let Monica know if you want a breakfast.  Followed by Pirates and if that isn’t enough its our Open Day too!

Pirates May 3rd

It was a miserably cold Thursday evening, but there was no dampening the Pirates spirit.  There were 2 Picos, 2 Oppies and 7 Toppers, with 17 children aboard.

The lake was flooded, so boats had to be launched in a quite unorthodox manner.  Treasure was collected across the lake, and boats played chase in a light wind.

Sadly, the lack of a good breeze caused an early end to the evening as fingers and toes got too cold to continue.

Spring Series 5 – Race Report

Excuses were aplenty for the fifth race in the series.  Bob was suffering from a dickie stomach so took a chance to fix his boat, Tracey wasn’t up in time to start the race, but turned up to sticker her boats, and there was no sign at all of Monica or Mark.

Still, there were 18 boats who braved the cold wind – much windier than forecast.  Dave P was feeling a bit delicate, so opted for a Radial rig but for the braver souls, there was a chance to make good use of spinnakers.

There was excitement at buoy 1 when Adrian ditched the new Vago, and kept the rescue crew busy as they tried to pull his mast out of the mud.  Hugh managed to stay out in the front for an hour before being caught by the lasers.

Steve started well but got tangled up with the 505 when he tried to lap it.  The Jolly Sailor couldn’t quite see the finish, but thinks it was Chris followed by David in his laser.

The race went on a bit longer than 90 minutes for some of the sailors as they didn’t hear the hooter and cruised around like spare parts at a wedding waiting for the comittee boat to give them their finishing place. Alas they never came. Perhaps the 505 is still out there !

Paul seems to have picked up a new skill from Pirates on Thursday – the photos clearly show him doing a bit of “stand up sailing”

Return of the Pirates

Wow, on a cold, wet and sometimes windy evening, some 26 children arrived to have an hour of fun and frolics on and in the water – bad luck Izzy on your capsize – under the watchful eyes of Gary, Paul and Ollie in the power boats.

After the usual briefing from Gary by ‘the log’ – the youngsters paired off in two’s and three’s to take to the water, by 18:45. There were 2 Oppies, 2 Picos and 9 Toppers. What a colourful sight for all the Mums and Dads, safely watching from the deck or inside the clubhouse – a very chilly evening…..

Gary was impressed by the triangular course that the entire fleet managed to keep up for a couple of laps – out to 7 across to 6 and back towards the jetty. There were hoops to throw and retrieve, and as the wind dropped the fleet rafted together and made an attempt to sail the whole fleet in a line across the lake.

The rain came in, the parents huddled under cover, but the fleet kept afloat……getting very, very wet all the while…..

The wind came up and the boats broke away from each other having fantastic free sailing – changing boats, laughing and having unrestricted fun playing chase.  There was also some interesting sailing from the front of the boat by Olly.

As the sailors became cold, there was a lap of the course as ‘stand up’ sailors saluting the commodore upon passing the clubhouse!!! We think he was busy ‘feeding his face’…??

Without too much chasing, the fleet returned to shore for 19:45 and, with fantastic help from parents and other members, the boats were stowed away and all were in the club for 20:00, for hot chocolate, a large piece of Craig’s birthday cake and a loud rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’.

Spring Series 4 – Race Report

By 0930 there was lots of activity in the boat park on a gorgeous cold but sunny morning…but the wind was set to increase…so said metcheck….
Colin and his team had a very busy morning, setting a slalom course from Tektona, using most of the bouys on the lake. The first away was Ryan in his Oppie, followed by Hugh in his Topper – an ‘official’ complaint came from these young men, that the course wasn’t radioed back to the shore before they took to the water…! 26 boats started, with only 17 completing the first lap!! Some unfortuantes had their first swim before they got to the start line. Sylvia eventually started, having had to return to the shore to secure her out haul. Adrian braved the strong gusty wind and took out his Vago, only to have his kite sheet jam, capsized and had to be towed out of the reeds back to the shore. Newton was looking great, spinnaker flying until his crew Ros fell overboard…is this more man over board practice we wonder?? The Laser ‘louts’ were positively flying around the lake between swims!! Peter with a 4.7 sail manage to survive 88 mins before he succumed to the icey water….there was a lot of sail washing to do…Steve wisely went for a Laser, instead of sailing the 505 single handed…..Lynne had taken one look at the wind and decided cooking was her mission for Sunday morning….good choice Lynne!! Young Dan, after his upteenth capsized came in, deciding that cotton shorts with positively blue legs beneath were not the ‘dress’ of the day!!
Big Paul looked positively glowing on his return to the shore…perhaps he had stayed upright for the 90 mins??
The less foolhardy/geriatric sailors, namely Dean, Chris and Monica, preferred to watch the race from the club deck, hot coffee in hands…..there was plenty of action at buoy 7….Mike capsized, righted himself, sailed backwards and briefly ‘camped’ out on the mark, causing a little mayhem for the boats following him……nice one Mike! While Bob and Sylvia both capsized spectacularly on the last lap at 7, as a fierce gust swept down the lake, much to the spectatores delight.
The 2 Bills popped down for a look at the fun on the water…while the leading boats, between baths, kept going/flying for the full 90 mins.
Everyone came ashore exhausted including the OOD team….someone was heard to say she did not have the energy to turn on a light switch!!
It looked as if about 12 boats finished the course, with David 1st, Roland 2nd, 3rd Jon……to be confirmed on the results page.
