Pirates 5th June

Wow what a mega turn out….anyone visiting the club last night was greeted by shrieks of laughter and the sight of 21 boats on the water with 40 youngsters having fun, closely supervised by 4 safety boats – thanks Dean for helping us out at the last minute.
Gary was in charge, putting the Pirates through their paces with short races…..inevitably some of the boats were blown into the trees but there was always someone on hand to assist.
Mums, Dads, Grannys and others were correctly attired in life jackets and wellies to help.
After everyone was safely off the water and enjoying warming hot chocolate, the capsizes were many in the gusty winds…..Dean, Sue, Ellie and Lucy tucked into fish and chips…….it was Lucy’s birthday!
Thanks to everyone who helped out, it was another great Pirate evening!!

RYA Training, 24th & 26th May

Despite the inclement weather all the 15 trainees coped very well, especially the youngsters, who all achieved Stage 1 and a substantial part of Stage 2 as well.
We all got wet several times over the 2 days, not just with capsizing, but everyone had a lot of fun! Hot soup and hot chocolate by the gallon were kindly made by Barbara and much appreciated.
Steve pitched in and helped us as well.
There are support boat practice sessions on the next 2 Saturdays for those going on to do the next stages in July.

CAMP SAIL 2014 IS ON THE 14th JUNE 2014

The very popular Camp Sail date is the 14th June (which is a change from the date originally set in the yearbook.) This was to accommodate the Annual 60th Birthday Anniversary Party on the 19th July and to ensure you all had an opportunity to come to both events if you can. Camp Sail starts at 2.00pm and tickets will be on sale soon! There is a list at the Sailing Club for those of you who are planning to come – Please do add your name to the list asap so we can plan for the evening BBQ and bacon sandwiches for the happy campers!

Thank you

Pink Fleet and Pirates.

Despite the very strong winds several pinkies arrived hoping for a race…..Monica cooked the breakfast, Dean got the safety boats out, but only 2 brave souls took to the water, Ian in his RS Vision, crewed by Mark. Gary tried to rig his Laser, but could not get his mast up in the strong breeze so gave up.
Pat teamed up with Dean in the power boat and Monica set a short course. All went well for a couple of laps then a particularly strong gust came through putting Ian and Mark in the water with their mast firmly stuck in the mud. Richard and Brian took to the water to help with the rescue, towing them back in as sadly Ian had lost his rudder…
Once everyone was safely ashore and warmed up, it was agreed by all that it had been a good practice session for rescuing a ‘stuc’k boat – while Ian and Mark had enjoyed their sail / survival!!!
The wind dropped slightly so Gary and Carole ventured out to watch over Louis and Ryhs in their Topper, after getting stuck in the trees they then enjoyed a great sail. The other hardy Pirates went out in the safety boats and had fun with a surf board close to the slipway. Our commodore gave us a splendid exhibition in Grace’s Topper, as did Gay in his….!!!
A very wet and cold Gary and Carole came ashore and we were all fortified with the
usual Pirates hot chocolate!
But the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the arrival of Tracey’s new Comet Walter, all bright and shiny…..a very excited Tracey watched it being put together, but she decided to wait for a calmer day to launch it for the first time with a bottle of bubbly!

Gusty wednesday evening race

The weather forecast was definitely correct this evening with gusts of up to 26 mph forecasted and consequently only a few took to the water after long discussions about which sails to use. The spectators were freezing on the jetty waiting for the spectacular capsizes to come. But apart from one capsize everyone was happily whizzing around the course. It was probably warmer sailing out there than watching from the jetty!

FIRST PIRATES + Pics.

What a lovely evening we had for the first Pirates – Gary was in charge, briefing every one by the log, before 19 youngsters took to the water. Monica was doing the register while James and Gary took to the power boats.
Mums, Dads and Grannies were on hand to help with rigging and launching, with Haidy assisting as well.
Laura had some fabulous Pirates ‘T’ shirts that we can order, with a special Captain’s one for Gary!
The Pirates were ‘put through their paces’ and the inevitable capsizing brought the evening to a close on the water…..apparently the water is not cold!!! But the hot chocolate was very welcome!!

Particularly good level 1 and stage 1 RYA course over Easter

Particularly good level 1 and stage 1 RYA course over Easter with all trainees completing the syllabus ahead of time and finishing the course as level1+. Boat rigging and launching/recovery was a particular triumph for everyone.
The weather was ideal with fine skies and 8/10mph winds, warm, even hot in the sunshine. A far cry from the gales of last year when we had to cancel one day.
Our seven beginners turned up on Good Friday looking a bit concerned about what we were going to do to them but were soon on the water, much sooner than they expected. They all seemed very pleased with themselves by lunchtime, having been reaching between buoys and most not yet having capsized, except Max who seemed to be on a mission to dunk his sail at every opportunity. The five adults were all outright novices but soon got the hang of things and by the second afternoon were all sailing a steady and controlled (mostly) triangular course: neat tacks and gybes, close hauled and broad reaches, returning to the jetty without any severe impacts.
The two juniors both had some Pirates experience under their belt and started ahead, quickly picking up the RYA approved methods and chasing the adults round the course by the second day. Jess in particular seemed keen to get back to Pirates and show off her new found skills to the others.
Post course feedback suggests that despite tiredness, bruises and aching muscles all trainees had enjoyed themselves and felt a real sense of achievement. They are all booked on level 2 or stage 2 courses in June/July and will be down practicing between now and then – if you see them going round and round in tight circles please give them a hand, they will appreciate it.
A rewarding aside was a new member who trained with Neilson in Greece: he popped down to see what he was missing and was amazed that our trainees rigged their own boats on day one when Neilson don’t cover that at any stage!
