26 July Summer Series 7

Before the race it was throwing it down with rain and there was no wind ! As a result there were only four takers for the Pursuit Race. Just before the start the wind did start to rise to 5 – 8 mph from a westerly direction, but it kept rising and falling and changing direction all through the morning.

John W set a fairly short course in the difficult conditions, 8, 5, 9, 6 and back through the start. There were three Lasers out, David C, Mike A, Steve P and then Adrian in his Vago. The only exciting point of the race was at the first mark 8, when all four boats arrived at the same time. The wind round this mark was very tricky and kept swinging around. After that they got stretched out and there were no changes in position right to the finish gun.

The wind got up before the Handicap Race to about 12 – 13mph and roughly from the same direction, but quite gusty, so Jon decided to join in the fun. John W tweaked the course to 9, 4, 2, 6 and back through the start line.
Mike A managed a double capsize on the first lap after cleating in his main sheet and leaning over the back of his Laser to clear weed from the rudder ! (not a clever thing to do in gusty conditions!)
First back through the line was David C followed by Jon, Steve P and then Adrian with Mike playing catch-up at the back.
At the end of the second lap Jon was just ahead of David and Mike had managed to catch Adrian.
Jon increased his lead on the third lap when David capsized just after crossing the start line, but there were no changes in position behind them.
On the last lap there were no further changes in position, Steve P did capsize after rounding 2 on the last lap but got going again quite quickly, so Mike was unable to catch him.
Final positions were 1st Jon; 2nd David; 3rd Steve; 4th Mike; 5th Adrian

Thanks to John W and the OOD Team Phil M and Jessica W.

22nd July Gillette Series 16

Monica having served last week as SOOD was also on duty this week and again she had a tricky wind direction to cope with. She used X as the first mark, straight out from the jetty) then along the buoy line to 5P, 9S, 4P, 1P, 6s,7S  and back through the start.
There were 21 starters but Steve S (Laser) and Chris S (Laser) did not make it through the start line after the first lap.
Ian C (Supernova) was first back through the line followed by the Lasers of Curtis and James and the Radial of Luke, who was closely followed by Dave L (Laser). There was a fleet of Leaders out tonight and Hugh & Hadey were in the lead in 7th place with Mike & Neville 11th, Tracey & Barbara 14th and Sally & Bob 17th. It was good to see Julian back on the water in his Solo and he came through in 9th place. Rick in his Laser was taking part in his first race and going well in 12th place. Amy had opted to sail the Comet tonight and was in 16th place just behind William in his Topper. At the end of the first lap Paul R, Hugh & Hadey and Mike A (Lightning) approached the last mark (7) line abreast, poor Hugh & Hadey were in the middle of the sandwich and there was heated discussion about rights (which continued after the race !).
At the end of the second lap the leading five boats were in the same positions, but Paul R (Aero) actually crossed the line in the same time as the Laser of Dave L. Paula (Radial) in 10th place was being chased by Mike & Nev and behind them Peter S (Byte) had gained one place by passing Rick. Dean & Nick (Vago) had decided to retire from the race but continued to sail.
By the third lap Paul R had moved up to 2nd and Dave L was up to 4th place. Mike & Nev had moved up two places to 9th displacing Hugh & Hadey as the leading Leader. Rick had repassed Peter, Tracey & Barbara had got past William and Paul H (Supernova) had gained two places. Sally & Bob decided to retire after three laps.
After four laps Ian still led Paul R, but Dave L had passed Curtis to move up to 3rd. Mike & Nev had moved up another two places to 7th (must have cracked up the outboard !). Peter S, Rick, Tracey & Barbara, William, Paul H and Amy received the finish gun at the end of this lap.
At the end of the fifth and last lap, the first eight boats had maintained station, but Hugh & Hadey regained a place by passing Julian who in turn had managed to get past Paula.

The final positions on the water were 1st Ian C; 2nd Paul R; 3rd Dave L; 4th Curtis; 5th James P, 6th Luke..

Thanks to Monica and the OOD Team of David M, Roland L, Roland and Ryan and ANO (name not on sheet).

19th July Summer Series 6

It was a similar wind to last week, WSW about 13 -15 mph.  Karen set the first beat to 5, across to 9 then up the lake to a gybe round 3 a run to 2 and then a run/reach to another gybe round 6, 7 and back through the start.
The star of the first Pursuit Race was Hadey in her 4.7; she was first back through the line on the first lap and stayed there until the finish gun. Luke (Radial) was also going well in his first outing this year and came through in 2nd place with the Lasers of James P, Steve P, Curtis and John W in 3rd to 6th places. Next through the line were Ian C (Supernova), Paul R (Aero), and Steve S and David M in Lasers. William was next through in his Topper followed by Ellen & Newton (RS200) then the two Vagos of Adrian and Dean & Nick and the Harley H2 of Colin H. Ellen & Newton were higher up coming down to 6, but caught a gust and performed some unusual manoeuvres before capsizing.
Mike A (Laser) had retired early into the lap with a jammed mainsheet pulley and Roland & Ryan with excessive weed problems. Gordon and Richard B decided not to start at all.
At the finish Hadey took the honours, James P had managed to get past Luke to take 2nd from him with Steve P 4th, Ian up to 5th and Curtis 6th.

The wind had picked up a bit more for the second race of the day and James and Mike A came together at the first mark and then poor James capsized whilst doing penalty turns. First back through the line was Paul R with Steve S 2nd and Newton & Ellen 3rd, Ian C 4th, Luke 5th, John W 6th, Curtis 7th and Hadey going well again in 8th.  Both Vagos had gone out again for more punishment and Adrian was as usual sailing single handed. William had also bravely ventured forth and was battling on at the back of the fleet.
By the end of the second lap Steve S had taken the lead and Ian had moved up to 3rd pushing Newton & Ellen down to 4th with Curtis moving up two places to 5th with Luke now 6th. Further down the fleet Mike A, David M and Steve P were having a good battle, but a recovered James P was catching them. Rounding 6, Steve P was right on Mike’s transom, but he capsized on the gybe allowing Mike to slip away. Dean & Nick and Adrian in their Vagos retired on this lap and William was given the finish gun.
The finish gun went at the end of the third lap and the first four boats had not changed position from the previous lap, but Luke had regained 5th place from Curtis. John W and Hadey had been battling all race for 7th place and John managed to cross the line just ahead of Hadey.
The final positons on the water were 1st Steve S; 2nd Paul R; 3rd Ian C; 4th Newton &Ellen; 5th Luke; 6th Curtis. On handicap the first two will retain their places, but Hadey will move up to 3rd with Luke 4th.

Thanks to Karen and the OOD Team of Natalie M, Jessica W, James C, Roland L and Stuart C.

15 July Gillette Series 15

Monica had a tricky job of setting a course with a very light NW wind. She used X as the first mark, straight out from the jetty then along the buoy line to 5P, 9S, 3P, 2P and back through the start.
There were 17 starters and the actual start was from the flag pole to the pin positioned toward 8. There was a difference of opinion as to which end to start with more wind at the far end but the near end giving a better angle. In the end the near end boats got to X first.
Steve S, thought he would check out the first leg by sailing towards X before the start but then got caught out when he did not realise the time and when the 1 min gun went he was left with too far to return and had to fight his way back through the starting boats to the start line and ended up starting last. He then spent the rest of the race fighting his way through the fleet.

First to X was Karen (Laser) with Newton (Solo) right behind and then Roland & Ryan (National 12) and Ian C (Supernova). By the time the leaders approached 9 they were all side by side with Karen and Newton on starboard converging with Roland & Ryan and Ian on port this ended with gentle contact and Ian doing penalty turns. By the time they had got to 3 at the far end of the lake Newton had pulled clear of the other three boats and remained ahead to the end of the race. Curtis came through on his own in 5th place, but Sylvia (Laser), Steve S (Solo), Hugh (Laser) and Ellen (Radial) were very close together as they came through and Bob in another Solo was trying to catch them.. Paul H (Supernova) came through just ahead of Dave L (Laser) and Chris A (Solo). Next through was Chris M (Laser) who followed by the battle between Sally & Stuart (Leader) and Chris & Carol (Sport 14). David M (Laser) was battling on but finding the light wind challenging and he received a finish gun at the end of the first lap.

The race was finished for everyone at the end of the second lap and the leaders across the line were 1st Newton; 2nd Roland & Ryan; 3rd Ian C; 4th Karen; 5th Curtis; 6th Sylvia.
Most other boats maintained station on this lap, but Sally & Stuart made up two places and Chris & Carol decided to retire before the end of the lap.

Thanks to Monica and the OOD Team of Nick J, John and Jan M, Nigel J.

ABANDONED BOATS & TRAILERS

Abandoned boats and trailers, posting of Part II Notice leading to the Sale or Disposal

ABANDONED BOATS – POSTING OF PART II NOTICES LEADING TO THE SALE OR DISPOSAL

Dear RSC Members,

Further to the email of the 11th June, the owners of the Laser and the Topper pictured below have not come forward. Therefore, Part II notices for the sale and disposal of the boats under the 1977 Torts Act have been posted on the boats. The owners have until the 7th October to move them from club premises. If either of these boats belong to you, then you must contact the club as soon as possible (Boat Park Marshall James Primrose, james_primrose@yahoo.co.uk).

The RSC committee would also like to remind all members that the club rules requires a valid boat park sticker which includes the member’s name to be clearly displayed on any boat kept in the RSC boat park.

Attached below are images of the following unidentified boats:

ABANDONED TRAILERS – POSTING OF PART II NOTICES LEADING TO THE SALE OR DISPOSAL

An audit of the Trailer Compound has determined that there are 24 trailers whose owners cannot be identified and/or we have no record of 2015 trailer park stickers being issued.

Therefore, Part II notices for the sale and disposal of the trailer under the 1977 Torts Act have been posted on the trailers. The owners have until the 11th October 2015 to either move them from the club premises or alternatively to purchase a 2015 trailer park sticker.

If you think you may have a trailer in the compound that might be in this group, we strongly urge to check as soon as possible and contact the club (Boat Park Marshall James Primrose, james_primrose@yahoo.co.uk). After the 11th October we will either be selling or scrapping any still unidentified trailer.

There are too many trailers to individually photograph, but here are some selected photographs below.

If you are interested in purchasing one of these trailers, please wait until the period notice is over. Our overriding goal here is to correctly identify the owners of the trailers, and to minimise or avoid the need for the club to take possession of any trailers.

12th July Summer Series 5

Another windy Sunday morning with a SW wind about 13 mph but stronger gusts coming through (usually just when you did not want them !)

Richard S set a long beat down to a gybe round 3, back to 2 and a gybe up to 4, another gybe round 4 then off on a run to 8 with yes another gybe round 8 ! Up to 6 and the usual gybe round 6 and finally round 7 (only sheeting in !) before going back through the start line.
Steve P and Andy Burr (welcome back Andy) seemed to be doing a major refit to the 505 on its side on the bank and David M seemed to have acquired a new sail. Karen and Sylvia opted for Radial rigs but sailed off the full handicap (probably a wise choice – the Radials for them and the full handicap for everyone else). Mike C had chosen a nice calm morning to try an outing in Paul H’s Supernova ! Adrian went for his Vago, when any wise man would have gone for his Laser (without the Rooster sail).
There were 20 starters for the Pursuit Race and Chris A (Solo) was first back through the start line. This makes a change from William in his Topper but the stronger winds enabled some of the other boats to catch him earlier. The high wind maestro Jon (Laser) came through in 2nd with son David C (Laser) in 3rd and John W (Laser) in 4th. James P (Laser) was going well in 5th and had just caught and passed Hugh in his Byte. Further down the fleet it was good to see yet another new entry into the series with Chris M in his Laser. Karen disappeared somewhere on this lap but not sure what happened to her.
At the finish gun Jon had moved into 1st with David 2nd and Dave L (Laser) 3rd, Ian C (Supernova) 4th, James P 5th and John W 6th. There were only two double handers out this morning and Ellen & Newton (RS200) finished 7th and Mike & Sally (Leader) were 11th.

There were 18 starters for the following Handicap Race, it may have been 19, but not sure if Hugh retired before the start or shortly afterwards. Mike & Sally had decided one race was enough, but Sally joined the rescue boat teams. Steve & Andy decided to join the race eventually but not before making a thorough recce of the rowing strip and giving everyone else a lap start. Mike A (Laser) capsized just before the 5 minute gun but did make the start (after a fashion).
Newton & Ellen came back through the start line in 1st place with Ian C 2nd, then the Laser train led by Jon followed by Karen, David C, James P, Dave L, Sylvia, John W, Mike A and Curtis, then finally another boat – the Solo of Chris A. Then there was Chris M in yet another Laser, but a bit of variety behind him with Peter S (Byte), Mike C (Supernova), Adrian (Vago) and nearly a lap later Steve & Andy in the coxless pairs. William decide to retire before the end of the lap.

By the second lap Ian had just taken the lead from Newton & Ellen. The other movers on this lap were Dave L up two places to 5th, and Mike A, Chris A, Chris M, Peter S, Mike C and Adrian all up one place. John W got caught by a gust on the way down to 2 and capsized, later to retire. Mike C, Adrian and Steve & Andy received the finish gun at the end of this lap.

At the finish the first three boats had maintained their positions, but Dave L had moved up another place to 4th. Chris A moved up one place to 9th, Curtis moved up two places to 10th and Peter S moved up a place to 12th. Mike A rounded 6 and then capsized gybing on the way to 7.
The final positions on the water were 1st Ian; 2nd, Newton & Ellen; 3rd Jon; 4th Dave L; 5th Karen; 6th David C.

Thanks to Richard S and the OOD Team of Jessica W, Ian S, Dean, John W and Sally.

08 July Gillette Series 14

It was a brisk NW wind this evening about 14 – 15 mph, but quite gusty. Steve S set the first beat up to 5, back down to 9, up to 4 and on to 3, a gybe round 3 down to 2 and then a great reach right to 6 with the usual 6, 7 and back through the start.
There were only 12 starters tonight, perhaps some had been deterred by the gusty conditions.
The first lap was a bit of a learning curve as the helms tried to adjust to the conditions. Curtis (Laser) came to grief gybing round 3 and Mike T (Laser) impaled his mast in the mud. Ian C (Supernova) was in the lead coming back towards the clubhouse, but he misjudged the gybe round 6 and capsized letting both Karen and David C (Lasers) through. Ian recovered in time to stay ahead of Newton (Solo) who came through in 4th place. Mike A (Radial) was next in 5th place closely pursued by Peter S (Byte) and Curtis who had managed to get going again. Sally & Stuart were next in a reefed Leader ahead of Paul H in another Supernova who was followed by Dean & Nick (Vago) who were just in front of Laser 148201 (sorry no name entered on the signing-in sheet). Mike T was still trying to extricate his mast !

At the end of the second lap David had taken the lead from Karen with Ian 3rd and Newton still 4th. The only other mover in the fleet was Laser 148201 who had moved up two places to 8th and Mike T was still battling with the mud.

On the third lap Mike A capsized on the reach from 2 to 6, but managed to get going before Peter could overtake him and Dean & Nick decided to retire. Mike T had now managed to free his mast and was sailing again but decided to retire. David was still in 1st place at the end of the lap but Ian had nipped past Karen into 2nd, but there were no other changes in position. Sally & Stuart and Paul H received the finish gun at the end of this lap.

The fourth and last lap saw Ian cross the line in 1st with David 2nd, Karen 3rd, Newton 4th, Mike A 5th and Peter S 6th. On handicap David should take the victory with Newton moving up to 2nd and Karen 3rd.

Thanks to Steve S and the OOD Team, Mike C, John M, Ian M, Julian, Hugh and Ellen.
