There was a lovely force 4 wind for the latest round of the Commodore’s Cup last night.
15 boats took to the water, with the start line right down the far end of the lake.
James C (RS 300) took an early lead, with Steve S (Blaze) following behind. Newton (Solo) rounded the first mark in 3rd place. In the midfleet, there was a close battle with several boats all jostling for position. Ralph (Solo) was leading this pack for much of the race, but was passed by Hugh and Joel on the last lap. James C crossed the line first, followed by Steve S & Newton. After handicap was calculated, Newton finished 1st, with Joel 2nd and James C 3rd.
There were capsizes a plenty, as Mark (Aero), James C, Richard W (ILCA) & Roland S (Solo) all went over.
A big thank you to Ale and his team for running the racing last night, especially to Ale for stepping in at the last minute.
After the race, there was Lasagna, Garlic Bread and Salad. Made by Carol.

Another shifty and Gusty day for the next installment of the Spring Series yesterday.
13 boats took to the water in what were truly boat breaking conditions.
The Pursuit Race was started with Ron in the Mirror, with the rest of the fleet setting off shortly afterwards. Karen got ahead of Ron and managed to keep ahead of the faster boats behind, finishing 1st. Newton finished 2nd, having overtaken Chris H, who finished 3rd. Mark B decided to retire in his Aero.
The Handicap race was led for the first 3 laps by Newton, but suffered a boat breakage and was forced to retire. Richard S inherited the lead in his ILCA 6, with Ralph not far behind. Elsewhere, Adrian retired in his Rooster 8.1.
Richard S crossed the line first, followed by Ralph (Solo) and Karen 3rd. On Handicap, Karen finished 2nd, demoting Ralph to 3rd place. Richard managed to retain his 1st place.
In the end, there were only 9 finishers by the end of the race, a testament to the trying conditions and the commitment of the racers.
The results yesterday mean Karen takes the lead in the Pursuit series. Whilst despite his retirement, Newton holds on to the lead of the Handicap series.

We’re back on Wednesday for the next race in the Commodore’s Cup.
A lovely North East wind for the latest installment of the Commodore’s Cup last night.
Mark set a nice short course, as the winds on a Wednesday typically drop throughout the evening. That wasn’t the case this time and the winds picked up throughout the race, giving plenty of recording for the race team stationed on the finish line.
19 boats took to the water, the majority of whom were all right on the start line at the gun. I’m sure Mark was looking forward to a general recall, but that wasn’t to be the case and all the boats set off towards the upwind buoy.
Steve S (Blaze) was the first to round the windward mark, followed by Hugh (Aero) and Newton (Solo). Steve extended his lead and sailed into clear air, whilst Newton was overtaken by Ralph on lap 2. James P, Karen & Joel were close behind Newton.
There wasn’t much change to positions after several laps, the best opportunity to overtake was on the upwind leg, and the shifting winds made it difficult to gain an overall advantage.
After 5 laps, Mark called the race to an end, obviously running out of room on the timing sheets. Steve crossed the line 1st, with Hugh 2nd and Ralph 3rd. Newton, Karen and James P weren’t far behind in 4th-6th respectively. Joel (ILCA 6) had a great race and was keeping up with the midfleet, but missed the start line on the 2nd lap, leaving him with a dsq!
On Handicap, Karen finished 1st, with Steve S just 4 seconds behind in 2nd. The podium was rounded off by Ralph in 3rd.

An incredibly shifty Force 3 for the May Day Pennant yesterday. A very temperamental wind with some unforgiving shifts.
Race officer James set a great course, but could do nothing about the wind, that sent several boats onto their side throughout the race.
The Pursuit race began with many of the boats not making it to the start on time. Several boats started late, giving a great advantage to those that were punctual. There was some close racing between the boats of a similar handicap, the Solo, Lasers and 2000, who passed Ron, the first to start in his Mirror.
Starting later than the rest of the fleet, Steve S in his Blaze took off in hot pursuit, the ideal wind for it. He quickly passed most of the other boats and set off in search of the Leaders. Out in front, Richard and Louise (2000) edged ahead of the other boats, but Steve S managed to pass them, taking the win at the final horn. Richard and Louise were 2nd and Darren (Solo) 3rd.
The wind picked up for the second race, and there was a hectic start line, with most boats trying a starboard end start. Steve took an early lead in his much faster Blaze, with Darren, Richard S, and Richard & Louise behind.
There were capsizes from Both Rick and Karen, who were both caught on the wrong side of the wind shifts, and several near misses from other boats in the fleet.
Steve S finished first on the water, but on Handicap, Richard and Louise were 1st, demoting Steve S to 2nd, Darren was 3rd.
For those that have been following closely, this left both Steve S, and Richard & Louise, with a 1st and 2nd apiece. A Tie!!!
Using the racing rules for breaking ties (Appendix A, point A8.2 for the real nerds), the Pennant winner is decided by the winner of the last race sailed. Therefore, a big Congratulations to Richard and Louise for winning the May Day Pennant, with Steve S 2nd, and Darren 3rd.

After the racing, there was Quiche, potatoes, and salad. Followed by Rhubarb Cake, both made by Ann.
We’re back on Wednesday, for the next race in the Commodore’s Cup.
Another evening of light winds for the Commodore’s Cup. Having been admonished for their lack of commitment on Sunday, 12 sailors took to the water with their tails between their legs.
There was an odd puff of breeze, shifting between the North and East, which made the race officers jobs even more difficult.
There was a very hectic start line, as the wind shifted and most racers wanted to take advantage of the starboard end bias. Karen, James and Richard were all involved, which prompted several discussions after the race with regards to racing rules.
Jess (ILCA) and Aileen (Comet) and Mark (Aero 7) had a great lift to the first buoy. Hugh (ILCA) managed to get past Mark on the downwind leg and past Aileen on the subsequent upwind. Meanwhile, James P (ILCA) and Karen (Comet) had got past the Leader, being helmed by Chris H.
On the second lap, Mark once again had a great lift on the upwind leg and took second place from Hugh, before being passed again on the run. Jess was way out in front but got passed by Hugh on the 3rd lap and then sat in a lull, losing out on valuable time.
Hugh ended up crossing the line 1st, with Jess 2nd and James P 3rd.
When the handicap was calculated, Hugh finished 1st, with Ron (Mirror) 2nd and Jess 3rd.

A very temperamental North Easterly wind for the Commodore’s Cup last night. 15 sailors took the water for a great course set by Ralph. Unfortunately for him, just as the race started, the wind died, leaving most of the marks in the dead patches.
A short line gave way to a hectic start, with plenty of boats jostling for position.
James P and Steve S got great starts and made their way into clear air. Hugh caught James at the first mark along with Newton who all sailed off to the downwind mark.
The wind completely died at the windward mark after this, leaving the rest of the fleet drifting towards it. The top 4 boats sailed clear, with Steve S (Blaze) a leg ahead of the others who were all jostling for position.
Throughout the rest of the fleet, there were several battles between the Lasers and the Aero of Mark, who managed to sail clear and get far enough ahead to beat them on Handicap.
Elsewhere, the Comets of Aileen and Karen were ganging up of the 470 of Mike and Ale, who only pulled away on the final leg.
Steve S crossed the line first, followed by James P and Hugh. On Handicap, Steve was demoted to 6th, with Newton in 1st, followed by James P and Hugh.
It was a close race, despite the spread out fleet, with only one and a half minutes separating the top 7 boats.

The dinner for this week was a light meal of Enchiladas, followed by Banoffee Pie, made by Hugh.
We’re back racing on Sunday for the next two races of the Spring Series.
4 races across the day, with a 10kt breeze coming from the North East.
Hugh set a fantastic course with minimal beats for the first pursuit race. Karen (comet) and Will S (Feva) gained an early lead, which Karen held onto, finishing first. Will lost places to Chris H (comet) and Steve S (Blaze) who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Will managed to hold on to 4th place.
Elsewhere in the fleet, Aileen managed a spectacular and vocal capsize, allowing most of the fleet to pass her. There was some close racing in the midfleet, but the Solos of Darren and Ralph were able to keep ahead.
It’s rare to improve upon perfection, but the course was changed for the Morning’s handicap race. Rick (Laser) had a fantastic start, great wind shift to the first mark and subsequently sailed a flawless race, passed only by Steve in his much faster Blaze, finishing 1st overall. Ralph had similar luck and finished just three seconds behind on Handicap. Richard S finished 3rd in his Laser Radial.
A quick stop back on the shore for a fantastic lunch of Spaghetti Bolognese, Garlic Bread and Ice Cream, made by Ann, before heading back out for two short afternoon races.
Left quaking in their boots from the course in the morning, only 7 sailors made their way out for the afternoon’s racing.
The wind got even shiftier for the third race, Steve Sharp was way out in front but lost a lot of time to the wind dying at one of the marks. Karen and Richard S were close enough to beat him to 1st and 2nd. Steve meanwhile was in 3rd. Elsewhere in the race, Steve P and Will S started to go to the wrong buoy and both lost out on what could have been a good final position.
The final race had a near perfect start, with Will S and Steve S way clear of the rest of the Fleet. It all came apart at the second windward mark when the wind died (honestly, why did the SOOD put the bouy there). Steve managed to slip through, but the rest of the fleet caught up and overtook Will. The rest of the fleet remained close, with Will keeping up with the much faster boats.
Steve maintained his lead to take 1st, with Karen 2nd and Will S 3rd.
Karen was the eventual winner of the Easter Cup, with Steve S 2nd and Richard S 3rd.

We’re back for more racing… and food! On Wednesday for the Commodore’s Cup
Wednesday Evening Racing is back! The first race of the Commodore’s Cup was a shifty Force 4/5 from the South.
11 boats fought for position at the start, with almost every boat on the line when the gun went. Darren gained an early lead, but Karen got a great lift off of the island and managed to catch up again at the windward mark.
A long run back down to the leeward mark kept everyone on their toes. On the second lap, Emily caught up with the leaders and was fighting with Darren. James and Rhys got past Karen in their faster ILCA’s, and Ralph caught up with Hugh, fighting for 3rd place.
Hugh manged to catch up with the leaders, overtaking Emily on the final leg. James meanwhile caught up Ralph, but was unable to pass him.
Darren crossed the line 1st, with Hugh 2nd and Emily 3rd, all within 6 seconds of each other.
On Handicap, Emily took the win, with Darren 2nd and Karen 3rd.
Several capsizes tonight, Steve P (3), Tim (2) and Mark B with a spectacular and audible death roll in his Areo.

More importantly than the race, Wednesday evening meals are back, tonight was a mixed bean and red pepper Chilli. Followed by either Rhubarb Crumble or Lemon Meringue Pie. Made by Ann.
We’re back racing on Sunday for the Easter Cup, 2 races in the morning, Lunch, followed by two races in the afternoon.
Finally, a return to a Southwesterly wind for the Spring series today. 13 boats took to the water in a Force 3/4 wind. Despite the return of our old faithful wind direction, the shifts were still present.
The Pursuit Race had several close battles, albeit spread across the fleet. Richard, Emily and Hugh, we’re jostling for an advantage throughout the race, Richard however remained ahead at the finish gun.
Up at the sharp end of the fleet, the Solo’s were right on the transom of Chris H in his comet for much of the race. Only Newton managed to get past him, taking 1st in his Solo. Chris H was therefore 2nd. Darren took 3rd.
The Handicap race began with a chaotic start, Mark B tried a port hand flier, but was met by several boats starting on starboard and had to take avoiding action. Darren meanwhile decided not to take part in any of the start procedures, and capsized on the buoy line, producing the only capsize of the day.
Steve S shot off in his Blaze, leaving the rest of the fleet behind. Newton and Hugh followed, fighting for position, with Emily skulking close behind.
Further back, the rest of the fleet were incredibly tight, with 5 boats finishing within 10 seconds of each other.
Steve crossed the line first, followed by Hugh and Newton. On Handicap, Emily took 1st Place in her ILCA 6, followed by Newton (Solo) and Chris H (Comet)
