Gillette Series 8 – 5th June Correction

Apologies to all, but a mistake in reading the elapsed race times led to an error in the reported result.

The positions on the water were correct and as follows- 1st Ellen; 2nd Karen; 3rd Mark; 4th Dean & Nick; 5th Rick; 6th Ed

However, on corrected time the positions should be –

1st Jemima; 2nd Ellen; 3rd Karen; Equal 4th Mark and Steve S; 6th Ed; 7th Chris H; 8th Dave & Ann.

Also, thanks to Nigel who was missed from the OOD team names..

Summer Series 3 – 9th June 2019

It was the lightest wind so far for the Summer Series this year, about 7 mph from the SW. Adrian set the first beat down to 3 then 9, 5, 4, 7 and back through the start.

Pursuit Race

There were 24 starters and Bea in her Oppie was first away followed by Chris H (Comet) and Rhys (4.7) then the Leaders of Sally & Mike C and Dave & Ann, the Radials of Will, Milo and Mike A and the Solo of Steve S. The only two of these to survive the chasing pack was Chris H who managed to hang on for 2nd place and Dave & Ann for 4th place!

The finishing order was 1st Newton & Ellen (RS200); 2nd Chris H (Comet); 3rd Karen (Laser); 4th Dave & Ann (Leader); 5th James (Laser); 6TH Mike Tr (Laser)

Handicap Race

Dave I went for his early cup of tea and Cecilia joined us for the second race, so the numbers were the same, but the course was not. First beat was now to 4 then 8, 5, 6, 7 and back through the start.

First back through the line were Ellen & Newton (RS200) already well ahead of Mike Tr (Laser) Chris H (Comet) and Karen (Laser). Steve S (Solo) came through in 5th place just ahead of Peter R (Enterprise). Then there was a close battle for 7th place with Dean & Nick (Vago) crossing the line just in front of Mark (Laser). About one minute later James, Jess and Jon crossed the line in close company, all in Lasers. Mike C & Sally (Leader) were next along with Hugh, John W, Richard S and Jeremy, all in Lasers, chasing them.  About 30 seconds later Dave & Ann (Leader) and Rick (Laser) crossed the line together with Will (Radial) not far behind them. The came the young and the old with Rhys (4.7), Milo (Radial), Cecilia (Radial) and Mike A (Radial) followed by the youngest of all Bea in her Oppie. Bea was given the gun at the end of this first lap ands some of us would not have minded joining her!

On the second lap Ellen & Newton still led from Mike Tr, but Karen had got past Chris H to move up to 3rd. Peter R retired on this lap so Mark moved up to take his 6th spot with James following him to 7th pushing Dean & Nick down to 8th. There was no change in the middle of the fleet, but Milo had a good lap at the back passing Will and Rick. Rhys and Cecilia received the finish hoot at the end of the lap

At the end of the last lap Karen had taken 2nd place from Mike but the 4th, 5th and 6th places had not changed. Dean & Nick had regained 7th and Jon had moved up two places to 8th with Richard S pipping James for 9th position. Everyone else maintained station or slipped back. (It was funny to note that on the race sheet my number was listed as 211361 rather than 163112 – I knew I was going slow but didn’t realise I was going backwards!)

The final order on the water was –  1st Ellen & Newton; 2nd Karen; 3rd Mike Tr; 4th Chris H; 5th Steve S; 6th Mark

On corrected time this should change to – 1st Chris H; 2nd Ellen & Newton; 3rd Karen; 4th Steve S; 5th Mike Tr; 6th Mark

Thanks to Adrian and the OOD Team of Al, Graham K and Nigel.

Gillette Series 8 – 5th June 2019

It was a similar wind to last week about 10-11 mph from the SW. Newton set the first beat to A (just the other side of Tektona) then 1, 5, 7, 6 and back through the start. The start was unusual inthat it was away from the flagpole in the middle of the lake with the pin near the buoy line.

There were 20 starters and first back across the line was Ellen (Laser) closely followed by Karen (Laser). Ed (Radial) came through next just ahead of Mark (Laser) leading Rick (Laser), Steve S (Solo), Dean & Nick (Vago) and Mike Tr (laser). About 30 seconds later Mike C & Sam (Wanderer) crossed in 9th place followed by Mike A (Lightning) and then the two Leaders of Dave & Ann and Sally & Stuart. Peter R was next along sailing his Enterprise single handed and he led Chris (Comet), Jeremy (Laser), Alistair (Vago s/h) and Paul H (Laser). Further back came Chris & Carol (420), Jemima (Oppie) and Emily (Topper).

At the end of the second lap Ellen and Karen still led, but Dean & Nick had moved up two places to 3rd. Ed and Mark crossed the line together in the battle for 4th place and Steve S crossed in 6th.  Dave & Ann had got past Mike C & Sam to move up to 8th with Sally & Stuart following them up to 9th place. Adrian was up four places to 13th just behind Peter R in 12th place.

On the third lap there was no change with the two leaders, but 3rd place was now taken by Mark. Steve S, Mike Tr and Rick all gained two places moving up to 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. The boats behind these three had all lost places and the next mover up the order was Alistair S gaining four places to 11th followed by Chris H up two places to 12th and Paul H up one place. Emily had passed Jemima and these two received the gun at the end of the lap and Peter R retired..

Ellen crossed the line in 1st place at the end of the last lap followed by Karen and Mark. Dean & Nick had regained some of the places they lost on the previous lap and came through to finish in 4th place and Rick gained two places to finish 5th. Ed also regained two places and just pipped Steve across the line for 6th place. The only mover further back was Jeremy who managed to gain a place by passing Mike C &Sam.

The final order on the water was – 1st Ellen; 2nd Kare; 3rd Mark; 4th Dean & Nick; 5th Rick; 6th Ed

On corrected time this becomes – 1st Jemima; 2nd Ellen ; 3rd Karen; 4th Dave & Ann and equal 5th Mark and Steve S.

Summer Series 2 – 2nd June 2019

The wind this morning was about 14-15 mph from the SSW, although it did keep veering from SW to West during the races. John W set the first beat to A (just North of No 2) then 1, 5, 8, 6, 7 and back through the start.

Pursuit Race

There were 20 starters and Chris H (Comet) and Rhys (4.7) were first away followed by the Leaders of Sally & Mike C and Nev & Mike, the Radials of Cecilia, Ed and Mike A and the Solo of Steve S.

However, the wind was too strong to enable them to fend of the later starting fast boats and at the gun the order was –

1st Simon (Blaze); 2nd Newton & Ellen (RS200); 3rd Mike Tr (Laser); 4th Mark B (Laser); 5th Richard S (Laser); 6th Karen (Laser)

Handicap Race

First back through the line was guess who? Simon B, already one minute ahead of Mark B, who in turn was 30 seconds ahead of Ellen & Newton in 3rd place. Mike Tr and Ed crossed the line together battling for 4th place with Karen not far behind in 6th. Just behind Karen, James (Laser), Jon (Laser) and Adrian (Rooster) were very close to one another competing for the 7th spot with Richard S just behind them. Nev & Mike (Leader) were next through the line in 11th place and they were 30 seconds ahead of Mike A (Radial), Steve S (Solo), . Rhys (4.7) and the second Leader of Mike C & Sally in the battle for 12th position. Then there was a slight gap back to Ralph, Rick and Jeremy in Lasers and Chris H (Comet). Cecilia (Radial) had capsized and gamely got going again only to capsize once more and wisely decide to retire.

On the second lap Ellen & Newton passed Mark to move up to 2nd and Adrian moved up five places to 4th position. Richard S moved up two places to 8th. Mike A capsized by pulling the boat over on top of himself and then drifted into the buoy line whilst righting the boat. Mike C & Sally got past him and Rhys to move to 14th,but Ralph passed them all to take 13th place. Rick moved up one place courtesy of Mike’s catastrophe and Jeremy gained another place by getting past Rick.

At the end of the third lap there was no change in the order of the first three, but Mike Tr had regained 4th spot from Adrian. The 6th to 8th positions, Karen, James and Richard S, remained the same, but Nev & Mike moved up two to 9th place by passing Jon and Ed. Fellow Leader sailors Mike C and Sally also gained two places by passing Steve s and Rhys.  Behind them there were no further changes in position.

The last and fourth lap saw Simon B crossing the line to take the victory well clear of Ellen & Newton in 2nd place. Mark and Mike Tr held on to 3rd and 4th with |James passing Karen and Adrian to take 5th position. Richard S also got past Karen to move up one place to 7th. Further back Ed repassed Nev & Mike to take 10th place and Steve repassed Ralph to move to 13th. Jeremy gained another place by passing Rhys.

The final order on the water was – 1st Simon; 2nd Ellen & Newton; 3rd Mark; 4th Mike Tr; 5th James; 6th Adrian

On corrected time this changes to – 1st Simon; 2nd Ellen & Newton; 3rd Mark; 4th Mike Tr; 5th James; 6th Ed

So actually not much of a change at all!

Thanks to SOOD John W and the OOD Team of Brian M, Jill G, Paul R and Richard C.

Whitsun Pennant – Monday 27th May 2019

Quite a brisk West wind this morning blowing about 15 mph and Karen set the first beat as 5, then 8, 4, 1, 3, 2, 6, B and back through the start (she couldn’t find 7 and A in the box!)

There were 11 starters and it turned out to be a bit of a war of attrition. Simon S (Blaze) was first back through the line at the end of the first lap and the second lap and the third lap! Julian B (D-Zero) repeated the feat in 2nd place, but then retired as he had sailed an incorrect course.

The 3rd place boat on the first lap was Newton (Solo), but then he retired on the second lap!

This meant that Adrian (Rooster) who was 4th on the first lap inherited 2nd place with the retirement of Julian and Newton.

Alistair S (Laser) who was in 5th place on the first lap also retired on the second lap with the result that Rhys (4.7) who was 6th on the first lap then crossed the line in 3rd place at the end of the race.

Mike C (sailing Steve’s Solo) crossed the line in 7th place on the first lap and completed every lap finishing up 4th on the water.

Chris H (Comet) was another casualty as he missed a mark on the third lap and was disqualified.

Dave P (Mirror), Emily (Topper) and Phoebe (Oppie) satisfactorily completed two laps and then receive the finish gun.

It was a good thing Karen could not find all the numbers as no-one would have finished!

The final order on the water was – 1st Simon; 2nd Adrian; 3rd Rhys; 4th Mike C; 5th Dave P; 6th Emily; 7th Phoebe

On corrected time the result becomes – 1st Simon; 2nd Rhys; 3rd Dave p; 4th Adrian; 5th Mike C; 6th Emily; 7th Phoebe

Congratulations to Simon on winning the pennant, he was actually the only one to keep the same position throughout the race!

Thanks to Karen and the OOD Team of Maggie b, Marion T, Richard H, Sam and Stuart..

Gillette Series 7 – 29th May 2019

With a SW wind of 8-10 mph Dave L set the first beat to 4 then 9, 5, 6, 7 and back through the start.

There were 16 starters tonight, which was a bit down on previous weeks, but a persistent light drizzle may have been the reason.

Simon B (Blaze) was first back across the line followed by Ellen (Laser), Newton (Solo) and Karen (Laser). Then along came the first double-hander, Dean & Mike C (Vago) in fifth place, just ahead of the Lasers of Mark B, Mike Tr and Jeremy.  These were followed by the second double-hander, Sally & Stuart (Leader) about 30 seconds ahead of Mike A (Lightning). About 90 seconds later Sam (Radial) crossed the line with Chris & Carol (420) a minute further back just ahead of Richard H (Laser + weed!) with Jemima (Oppie), Emily (Topper) and Phoebe (Oppie) behind him.

At the end of the second lap, there was no change with the three leaders, but Mike Tr had made up four places to move to 4th place.  Sally & Stuart had passed Jeremy to move up to 8th and Richard H had gained two places to move to 11th.

On the third lap Simon still led Ellen and Newton, but there was a god battle behind them, with Dean & Mike C now up to 4th and Karen and Mike Tr crossing the line together contesting 5th place. Behind this group there were no other changes in the order. Sam, Chris & Carol, Jemima, Emily and Phoebe all received the gun at the end of the lap.

On the last lap the only changes were Karen pulling away from Mike Tr to confirm 5th place and Mike A pipping Jeremy across the line for 9th place.

The final order on the water was – 1st Simon B; 2nd Ellen; 3rd Newton; 4th Dean & Mike C; 5th Karen; 6th Mike Tr

On corrected time this changes to – 1st Simon B; 2nd Jemima; 3rd Newton; 4th Ellen; 5th Sally & Stuart; 6th Karen

Thanks to Dave L SOOD and the OOD Team of Gordon P, Pat G, Rich F and Will S.

Summer Series 1 – 26th May 2019

There was a brisk SW wind of about 14-15 mph and Dave L set a first beat to 3, then 2, 5, 8, 7 and back though the start

Pursuit Race

There were 13 starters today and 9 of these were Lasers, although five of these were using radial rigs and Adrian was going the other way by using his Rooster rig!

First man away Chris H (Comet) had been caught by the end of the first lap by Ellen & Newton (RS200), Jess (Radial) and Mike & Sally (Leader) and these three held their position to the gun.

The finishing order was – 1st Ellen & Newton; 2nd Jess; 3rd Mike & Sally; 4th Karen; 5th Julian B; 6th Chris H

Handicap Race

Everyone stayed on for the second race and Julian B (Devoti D-Zero) was first back through the line one minute ahead of Newton & Ellen (RS200) followed by the Lasers of Jon, Karen and Ralph. Adrian (Rooster) was next across the line in 6th place, some 30 seconds ahead of Mike Tr (Laser) and Jess (Radial). Then there was a slight gap back to Mike & Sally (Leader) and Rick (Laser) then bringing up the rear of the fleet were Mike A (Radial), Chris H (Comet) and Cecilia (Radial).

By the end of the second lap Julian and Newton & Ellen were still ahead, but Mike Tr had moved up four places to 3rd place with Ralph up one to 4th place and Adrian up one to 5th. Rick had passed Mike & Sally, but there were no other moves in the right direction!

Cecilia got going after a capsize but received the gun at the end of the lap.

By the end of the last lap the only change in the top six was Adrian passing Ralph to claim 4th place, Mike & Sally repassed Rick and that was the end of the day’s manoeuvres.

The order on the water was – 1st Julian B; 2nd Newton & Ellen; 3rd Mike Tr; 4th Adrian; 5th Ralph; 6th Karen

On corrected time the order becomes – 1st Newton & Ellen; 2nd Mike Tr; 3rd Julian B; 4th Ralph; 5th Jess; 6th Karen

Thanks to Dave L and the OOD Team of Ann L, John H, Nev and Pat G.

Gillette Series 6 – 22nd May 2019

With a SW wind of about 9-10 mph, Steve S set the first mark as 4 then A (roughly near 2 but further in to miss the lee of the trees) then 5, 8, 6, 7 and back through the start.

There were 25 starters and Ellen (Laser) was first back through the start line followed closely by the Lasers of Mark B, Karen and Mike Tr. About a minute later Newton (Solo) crossed the line in 5th place leading the gaggle of Jeremy, Curtis and Joe in Lasers, then Dave & Ann (Leader), Chris H (Comet), Ralph (Laser) Mike C & Sam (Wanderer), Sally & Stuart (Leader). Finally Steve had chance to draw breath for a minute before Rick (Laser) came along in company with Dean & Nick (Vago), Chris A (Solo), Mike T (Laser), Paul H (Laser), Adrian (Vago s/h), Ron (Mirror), Emily (Topper), Nigel (Laser) and Jemima (Oppie) with Chris & Carol (420) bringing up the rear. This lot were virtually line astern and we can thank our lucky stars that someone else (namely Steve and his team) was having to log them across the line!  Mike A (Lightning) did not make it across the line as his mainsheet came adrift.

Ellen still led at the end of the second lap with Karen overtaking Mark and Mike Tr to move up to 2nd place. The next four maintained station, but Ralph moved up two places to 9th and Rick passed Sally & Stuart to move to 13th. Paul H gained two places by passing Chris A and Mike T and further back Nigel also gained two places.

On the third lap Mark B took the lead with Karen still in 2nd and Ellen slipping to 3rd place. Mike Tr, Newton and Jeremy held their places, but Ralph moved up two to 7th by passing Curtis and Joe. Rick had a good lap moving up three places to 10th and Dean & Nick made up four to move to 11th. Paul H and Adrian both gained a place. Jemima and Chris & Carol received the finish gun at the end of the lap.

At the end of the fourth and last lap there was no change in the first six, but Joe had regained two places to finish in 7th place. Mike C & Sam pipped Dave & Ann to take the double handed honours and Chris H got past Dave & Ann. Mike T made up two places by passing Adrian and Nigel. Poor Chris A having sailed all four laps found himself disqualified for sailing the wrong course!

The final order on the water was – 1st Mark B; 2nd Karen; 3rd Ellen; 4th Mike Tr; 5th Newton; 6th Jeremy.

On corrected time the order should be – 1st Mark; 2nd Newton; 3rd Karen; 4th Ellen; 5th Mike Tr; 6th Mike C & Sam

Thanks to Steve S and the OOD team of Ferdinando, Hugh, John H and Rich F.

Spring Series 12 – 19th May 2019

It was a light wind last Sunday and another light wind today about 5 mph coming from the NEish!

Julian B set a fairly short course so the we could see more of everyone, whether that’s a good thing is a matter of opinion.

Pursuit Race

This morning there were 13 starters, one more than last week and that one was probably Dave I, who turns out for a bit of fresh air when the weather is nice.

A bit of a surprise this morning as Ron was caught by Ellen & Newton, but he was 2nd and as usual Chris H was next in 3rd place with Karen a close 4th. The final order was-

1st Ellen & Newton (RS200); 2nd Ron (Mirror); 3rd Chris H (Comet); 4th Karen (Laser); 5th James (Laser); 6th Mike Tr (Laser)

Handicap Race

Dave decided he’d had enough fresh air and fun for one day, but he was replaced by Jewels in her Mirror.

The second race was a four lapper and first back through the line was Newton & Ellen, who obviously had their Weetabix this morning as they had pulled out a minute on 2nd place man James, who in turn had 30 seconds over Ralph (Laser) in 3rd place. Chris H came through in 4th place, just ahead of a close group of boats led by Karen followed by the Lasers of Mark B, Alistair S and Mike Tr. The only Leader out today crossed the line next in 9th place with Mike C & Sam on board, with Rick (Laser) just behind them.  A minute later came the Mirrors of Jewels and Ron followed by Cecilia (Radial).

There was no change with the two leaders at the end of the second lap, but Mike Tr had put the booster on and gained five places to move up to 3rd place. Mike C & Sam made up two places and further back jewels was still ahead of the old man.

On the third lap the first four maintained station, but Karen passed Ralph to move up to 5th and Mark B moved up two places to 7th by getting past Alistair and Mike C & Sam. Further back Ron had just edged in front of Jewels and Cecilia received the gun at the end of the lap.

At the end of the last lap Newton & Ellen kept their lead and crossed the line in 1st place. Chris H managed to take 3rd place from Mike and in the only other change in order Rick came through with a late surge to pass Alistair.

The final order on the water was – 1st Newton & Ellen; 2nd James; 3rd Chris H; 4th Mike Tr; 5th Karen; 6th Ralph

On corrected time the order changes to – 1st Chris H; 2nd Newton & Ellen; 3rd James; 4th Mike Tr; 5th Karen; 6th Ron

Thanks to SOOD Julian B and the OOD Team, who will have to remain nameless as none of their names was recorded on the race sheet!

This were the last races of the 2019 Spring Series, so congratulations to Ron (Mirror) for winning the Pursuit Series and to Chris (Comet) for winning the Handicap Series. bot

Spring Series 11 -12th May2019

Mike N had a very light and variable wind to contend with this morning.

Pursuit Race

There were 12 starters and it was good to see Ben & Lilam (apologies if I have got that name wrong) out on the water in a Laser 2000. First man away Ron (Mirror) repeated his feat of last week and maintained the lead right to the end of the allotted time. Chris H (Comet) who was second away did a similar trick and was still 2nd at the gun!

The final order was –

1st Ron (Mirror); 2nd Chris H (Comet); 3rd Mike Tr (Laser); 4th Ralph (Laser); 5th Chris A (Solo); 6th Mike C & Karen (Leader)

Incidentally Dave & Ann in another Leader were 7th and Nev & Sam in the third Leader were 9th.

Apart from Dave & Ann who appear to be constant companions, it’s getting difficult to keep up with the other Leader crews. Do they throw their car keys into a pile and take pot luck!

Handicap Race

The wind was no better for the second race and although everyone decided to give it another go, it was a one lap affair.

Mike T got away got away from the rest of the fleet and finished three minutes ahead of Adrian (Laser) in 2nd place, but he was only 20 seconds clear of Ralph in 3rd. The two Chrises (or crises?) had a good battle for 4th place with Mike C & Karen and Nev & Sam not far behind them. The final order on the water was –

1st Mike Tr; 2nd Adrian; 3rd Ralph; 4th Chris A; 5th Chris H; 6th Mike C & Karen

On corrected time Mike keeps his victory but the order behind him changes considerably to –

1st Mike Tr; 2nd Chris H; 3rd Chris A; 4th Adsrian; 5th Mike C & Karen; 6th Ron

Thanks to Mike N and the OOD Team of Bob L, Chris M, John H and Roland L. and th
