BBQ Series Race 1

Sunday afternoon saw the first in a new series designed to encourage the younger members of the club (and/or for those new to sailing) into some informal and fun racing and to make use of those hopefully glorious summer Sunday afternoons.

Anyway the theme for Race 1 was the IOW Round the Island  (no prizes for guessing the course !) and 12 boats took part,  4 in the adult handicap class, 7 youth toppers and 1 intrepid oppie !  The afternoon saw some lovely sunshine and some useful (but not too useful) winds even for getting around the lee side of the island.  The course was 3 laps or whenever the OOD got bored !

Monica in her Europe lead the fleet off at the start and showed the way around the island, particularly where the wind was on the lee-side.  Took a while for the following fleet to twig this !  Anyway Monica was followed by gaggle of  Toppers, including Joe,  Edward, Sam Alex and Luke, William, Rhys, Jemima in her oppie, and two lasers.

Monica of course made it look too easy, finished the first lap in just over 5 mins and completed the other two in an overall time of 20m:25s to romp home in 1st place which ever way you looked at it.  There was some hard competition going in the Topper fleet behind them with positions changing a number of times.  The competition was possibly a little too intense at times – Rhys I am pretty sure racing rules do not allow the use of water pistols on opposing boats !  Jemima did well to keep in contact with the rest of the fleet and to put up with the contrary winds behind the island.

Anyway, after Monica,  Joe came home as the first topper, with Edward just behind him. Edward would have made 2nd if passed on the right side of the finish mark on the first attempt ! Sam was the 3rd youth topper, with William as the 4th.  The full results by class are shown below.   After the racing came the BBQ bit with a couple of the families taking advantage of the weather to light up the BBQ and enjoy the summer evening.

The next race in the series – the “Fastnet” – is on Sunday 21st June 14:30 (ish) start.  So come on all you budding topper racers why not come along and see if you can knock Joe off his pole position.  We also need more oppies to give Jemima a run for her money.

3rd June Gillette Series Race 9

Karen was pressed into service as SOOD as she had stitches in her arm and was banned from racing. This was a pity as it would have been a good night for her. Nice and sunny with a light 8 mph wind.
There were 25 starters and first back through the line was Steve S (Laser) followed by Ian (Supernova) then David C (Laser), Newton (Solo), then the five Lasers of Sylvia, Hugh, Dave L, Curtis and Mike T. Next along was Monica (Europe) closely followed by Paula (Laser), Chris A and Mike C (Solos) and Mike A (Lightning). Sally & Stuart in the Leader were the first in a double hander and they were being chased by Peter S (Byte), Ellen in the only Radial out tonight,  then the second double hander of Ralph & Joe in the Feva. At this stage Bob was the last Solo having a battle with Paul H (Supernova) and the third double hander of Dean & Nick in the Laser II just in front of Angela & Crew (put your name on the race sheet) in her Comet Duo and bringing up the rear were Tracey (Comet) and Chris S (Laser).
After two laps Ian had taken the lead from Steve, Sylvia had made up a place to 4th, Curtis had gained three places to 5th and Paula two places to 9th. Other significant movers were Bob up two place and Paul H up four places.
At the end of the third lap the five leaders held station, but Hugh had regained two places to 6th. Further down the fleet Ellen, Mike C, Mike A and Paul H were enjoying a good tussle.
The fourth lap saw David C move up to 2nd and Sylvia to 3rd and Newton had repassed Hugh to move to 6th. Dave L was sailing a steady race in 8th place being chased by Paula and Mike T who were having a close race. The most notable mover was Bob who gained four places up to 13th.
At the end of the fifth and last lap there was no change in position for the leading 10 boats, but Paul H, Bob and Ellen all gained one place.
The final positions on the water were 1st Ian; 2nd David C; 3rd Sylvia; 4th Steve S; 5th Curtis; 6th Newton.
On handicap this will change slightly with Newton’s Solo moving up to take 2nd place.

Thanks to Karen and the OOD team Mark, Graham and Stan (or that might be Sian !)

Youth, Junior and Oppie Sailors Race in Thames Valley Challenge

Saturday 6th June saw over 90 children racing in the Thames Valley Challenge hosted by Silver Wing Sailing Club. Among those were 10 of our Youth, Junior and Oppie Sailors.
The Thames Valley Challenge is a team racing event of six children in three Fevas per team and there were 14 teams competing.
A sunny, but blustery day saw 42 races sailed, and lots of capsizes.
Well done to Hadey and Kate, William and Thomas, Ben and Rhys whose Reading Team finished a very creditable 5th.
Well done also to Amy, Joe, Louis and Edward who combined forces with some children from Maidenhead Sailing Club to create the Redheads Team and finished 11th.
“Fun but scary at times” was the comment from our youngest sailor.
“Dad, Mum can we get a Feva XL” from two of them – they’ve been told to start saving their pocket money!
A great day was had by all the children and they did the club proud.
Follow the link to some great photos of the children in action

31 May Spring Series 12

This was a really windy day (about15 mph from the West) for the last race of the Spring Series.
Adrian (SOOD) put in No 1 as the first mark giving people the option of going through the inside of the island, before going up to 5P,then 3P, 8P, 6S, 7S.
There were only 12 starters including the two Toppers of brothers William and Rhys. Karen and Steve S opted for radial rigs, but the other Lasers went with the full sail.
William was first back round with Hadey (4.7) 2nd  and Newton & Ellen (Laser 2000) 3rd. Steve S had just got Past Rhys to come through in 4th with the Lasers of David C, Jon, Karen, Dave L and Richard S occupying the 7th to 10th places. Last starter Ian C (Supernova) was 11th and Alistair S (Laser)12th.
By the end of the second lap Newton & Ellen had taken the lead and kept it right to the finish. Steve S had moved up to 2nd with Hadey 3rd, David C 4th, Jon 5th and William 6th.
The third lap saw David C move up to 2nd and Jon to 3rd. The other movers were Ian up to 6th, Karen up to 7th, and Richard and Dave to 8th and 9th.
The first three boats maintained position on the fourth lap, but Ian moved up to 4th and Karen to 5th
Just before the gun Ian took a gamble and went inside the island in an attempt to get past Jon, and was deemed by the SOOD to be nearer to 1 and the finish so snatched 3rd place. Everyone else maintained position.
The final positions were 1st Newton & Ellen; 2nd David C; 3rd Ian C.

Thanks to Adrian and the OOD Team of Sylvia and James P (there must have been other members of the team but they did not write their names on the race sheet – but thanks to them anyway)

The overall series winner was David C with 2nd Newton & Ellen and 3rd Jon.

Summer Series

The Summer Series starts this Sunday.

By popular request the format is going to change from one 90 minute handicap race to two races consisting of a 35 minute pursuit race followed by a handicap race of approximately 45 minutes. The overall time taken to run the two races should be about the same as the one 90 minute race. The races will be scored as two separate series with their own trophies. Thus competitors can decide to enter either or both series.
The pursuit race will start at 10.30 with the 5 minute warning hoot at 10.25. The handicap race will start as soon as the positions from the pursuit race have been taken and boats have had time to return to the start area. For those wanting to turn up for the second race only this won’t be before 11:10. The new start times for the 35 minute pursuit can be found on the website under racing and will also be on the notice board. Please note these are much shorter than the 90 minute pursuit, e.g the Laser is 7.5 minutes, so you will need to be on the water sooner.
Any questions then please ask me.

27 May Gillette Series Race 8

Rod, with a 12-14 mph West wind, set a first beat down to 4, across to 2, back to 8, up to 5 on the buoy line, then the usual 6, 7 and back through the start.
There were 22 starters including a mini fleet of Toppers sailed by Jo, Edward and Ben.
First back through the start line was Ian C (Supernova) followed by David, Curtis and Karen all in Lasers. Newton (Solo) was next through in 5th place, then Hugh(Radial) just in front of Steve S (Laser) followed by the Radials of Paula and Sylvia. Peter S (Byte) was next in 10th, pursued by Mike A and Ellen in two more Radials and Paul H (Supernova). Sally & Stuart in the Leader (not reefed, but wet suited and booted – just in case !) were the first double hander and they were followed by John H (Laser), Amy (Europe), Mike C (Solo) and then the second Leader of Rob & Craig. Chasing them was Tracey in her Comet and then the intrepid trio of Jo, Ben and Edward in the Toppers. Jeremy started in his Skipper 12 but retired at some time during the first lap.
The second lap saw the three leaders unchanged, but Steve S had passed Karen and Hugh to move up to 4th. Sylvia had passed Paula to take 8th place and Mike A and Ellen had got past Peter S to move up to 10th and 11th. John H had moved up two places and Mike C one place by passing Amy. Tracey had decided to call it a day, but the three Toppers were still gamely battling on in the frisky conditions.
At the end of the third lap there was no change in the leading three but Karen had repassed Steve S. Newton was still in 6th place and behind him there was a great battle between the Radials of Hugh, Sylvia, Paula, Mike and Ellen with Paul H and John H mixing it with the Radials. Rob & Craig had managed to catch and pass Sally & Stuart in the battle of the Leaders and Amy was still chasing them, but the three Toppers had wisely retired.
Fourth lap and Ian was still leading with David in 2nd, but Karen had moved up another place to 3rd pushing Curtis down to 4th. Steve S had retired moving Newton up to 5th. Hugh and Sylvia were neck and neck for 6th spot. There were no other changes in position, although there was some close racing. Mike C thought he had been given the gun and sailed off course, only to discover after the race that he had not been finished !
Curtis came to grief on the last lap when he suffered severe cramp and could not get across the boat ! Hugh managed to get an inside overlap on Sylvia on the very last mark to pip her at the finish.
At the gun the final positions on the water were 1st Ian; 2nd David; 3rd Karen; 4th Newton; 5th Hugh; 6th Sylvia.
Ian and David had identical times on handicap, so it was a joint first place.

Thanks to Rod and the OOD team of Monica, Chris A, Eddie, Don and Nick J.

NSSA Inland Champs

Well done to Hugh and Hadey who competed in the National Schools Inland Champs at Datchet SC on May 23rd/May 24th.

Hugh finished 7th in the Laser Radial Class and Hadley 12th in the Handicap Class.

25 May Whitsun Pennant

Paul R used a Tektona start and with a 9 mph NW wind set a first beat straight up to 4 on the buoy line, then back down to 2 across to 9 and on to 8, turn left (or perhaps that should be hard to port) up to 5 then down to 1 and back up through the start.
There were 12 starters and welcome to James and William Hawkins. Richard S kindly woke Mike A up just before the start with a T-bone (no – not a steak !)
There was a slight traffic jam at the first mark, but everyone eventually got round.
David C (Laser) led at the end of the first lap with the Lasers of Richard S and Karen crossing the line together in joint 2nd place with Jon also in a Laser in 4th place.  Monica (Europe) was right up with the leading Lasers in 5th place and then there was a slight gap back to Newton & Ellen (RS200) in 6th. Then there was a bigger gap back to Mike A (Lightning) and Mike C (Solo) who were followed by Chris M & lady friend  in his 420 (apologies but no name was entered on the  Declaration Sheet). Tracey & Amy were next along in their Leader just ahead of James H (Laser) and William H (Topper).
By the second lap Newton & Ellen had come through from 6th to 3rd place and the only other mover (in the right direction) was James H who had gained two places.
Lap 3 and Newton & Ellen had passed Karen to take 2nd place and Richard S who had slipped to 6th on the second lap was now up to 4th. The rest of the fleet retained their positions.
At the end of Lap 4 Chris & lady friend had decided to retire from the fray, which moved everyone below them up one place, but Tracey & Amy went one better by passing James.
The fifth lap was the last and there was only one change in position as James had repassed Tracey & Amy. They had been together the whole of the race and enjoyed a great tussle.
The final positions on the water were 1st David C; 2nd Newton & Ellen; 3rd Karen; 4th Richards S; 5th Jon; 6th Monica.
The only change on handicap is likely to be Monica leapfrogging Jon.

Thanks to Paul R and his OOD team Carol M, Hadey, Nev R, Bill C and Paul W.
