20 July Summer Series Race 6
20 July Summer Series Race 6
Peter R set a first leg down to No 5 from a Tektona start line, because the wind veered round after the course was set this was not actually a beat. The wind was a light NW about 6 mph.
Newton & Ellen (Laser 2000) and Ian C (Supernova) adopted an unusual and slightly risky strategy of coming back to the start line on starboard from the wrong side of the line and then tacking round to start. Did not realise that this was a legitimate manoeuvre, but it certainly worked as Ian led round the first mark.
At the end of the first lap Ian led followed by Karen (Laser) then Dave L (Laser). Dave I (Laser) was going well in 4th place, with Newton & Ellen 5th and Curtis (Laser) 6th.
Chris A (Solo) was on his own in 8th place with Nev & Mike (Leader) chasing him.
Further down the fleet Monica (Europe) was battling with the Lasers of James P and Phil A.
The next four boats were really close with Mike C (Solo) just heading Adrian (Vago), Hugh (Byte) and Eddie B (Laser). Bringing up the rear were Sally & Stuart (Leader), Paul W (Radial) and Chris M (Laser).
As the wind was very light and the weed was very thick there was only time for two laps and Eddie decide not to bother with the second lap at all.
The three leaders came through the finish line in the same order but Newton & Ellen had managed to get past Dave I into 4th place. Monica had moved up to 8th from 11th and Mike C finished almost alongside having moved up to 9th from 13th. Adrian was the other winner on the last lap moving up to 10th from 14th. Most others held station in their first lap positions but Chris A and Mike & Nev were the lead weights dropping down to 13th and 14th respectively.
The final placings on the water were 1st Ian, 2nd Karen, 3rd Dave L, but Karen was probably close enough to Ian to take the honours on handicap.
Please note that the previous race report should have been Gillette Series Race 13 not 12 !
