Frostbite Series 3 – 23rd December 2018

The forecast was for a SW wind about 11 mph, but just before the start it was nowhere near that. Fortunately, once all the boats were on the water it did pick up and probably matched the forecast.
Dave P used a flagpole start with a first beat down to 4 then 2, 5, X (near 8 but a little further out), 7 and back through the start.

There were 17 starters with 6 Lasers, 3 Leaders, an Aero, Blaze, Comet, Mirror, Radial, Solo, Vago, 4.7 and a partridge in a pear tree.

First back through the line was guess who? Simon on his bedstead (with his stocking tied on) very closely followed by Steve S in his Aero with a Laser trio led by Ellen then Mike T and Ken not far behind. Dean & Nick (Vago) came through in 6th place, then the Lasers of Ralph and James crossed the line together battling for 7th. Newton (Solo) slipped through in 9th place with Dave & Ann in the first of the Leaders in 10th place followed by Mike C & Sally in the second of the Leaders. Mike A (Radial) was next through being chased by Chris H (Comet), Gareth E (Laser), Rhys (4.7) and Nev & Hugh (Leader) with Ron bringing up the rear in his Mirror.

On the second lap Simon had increased his lead from one second to 30 seconds, but Steve was keeping him honest. Ellen was still 3rd, but Ken, Ralph and Newton all gained a place to move up to 4th, 6th and 8th respectively. James had slipped back to 9th but from 10th place downwards there was no change in the order.

There were only three changes of position during the third lap, Ken moved up another place to 3rd, James regained a place to move to 8th and Nev & Hugh also gained a place.

By the end of the fourth lap Simon had stretched out his lead to a minute and a half, but the only changes in position behind him were Ralph crossing the line just ahead of Mike T to move up to 5th and Ron managing to catch Rhys. At the end of this lap Chris, Gareth, Nev & Hugh, Ron and Rhys all received the finish gun.

At the end of the fifth and last lap Simon’s lead was up to two and a half minutes and the only movers were Nick & Dean who gained a place to cross the line in 6th place.

The final positions on the water were –
1st Simon; 2nd Steve; 3rd Ken; 4th Ellen; 5th Ralph; 6th Dean & Nick

On handicap the first two should keep their places, but it looks as if Ron will move up to 3rd pushing Ken and Ellen down to 4th and 5th with Newton moving up to 6th.

Thanks to Dave P and the OOD Team of Dave I and Nick M.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Frost Bite Series 1 – 9th December 2018

First race of the Frostbite Series and it was very windy with a 17-24 mph West wind. It was actually not quite as windy as last year when we had gale force winds and only four boats ventured out!
James set a start line between a power boat and the pin parallel with the jetty then straight across to X by the buoy line, then down to 9, 5, 3, 8, 6, 7 and back through the line. This gave two long reaches and with this wind there was plenty of planing.

There were 16 starters and most of those with an option for smaller sails took it (although in Adrian’s case this meant dropping down to a full Laser rig from his Rooster rig!).
First back through the line was Jon (Laser) followed by Mike Tr (Laser) and these were being chased by Simon atop of his flying bedstead. Newton (Solo) came through in 4th place closely followed by Steve S (Aero) and Ralph (Laser). One minute later Adrian (Laser) arrived in company with Sally & Mike C (Leader) and Dave & Ann (Leader) with William next in a Leader sandwich as he was followed by Nev & Mike in the third Leader. There was a slight gap and along came the Jones boys in the Vago and they were well ahead of Rick (Laser) and Chris H (Comet) with Jeremy three minutes further back with a determined Olivia in her Topper bringing up the rear of the fleet. Karen retired on this lap.

By the end of the second lap Simon had come to the fore, pushing Jon and Mike T back to 2nd and 3rd place. Behind them Newton and Steve S were having a great battle for 4th place as were Ralph and Adrian for 6th. William and Nev & Mike had managed to pass Sally & Mike C to move up to 9th and 10th respectively. Two minutes further back Rick and Chris H were also having a good battle and Jeremy chasing them had gained a place with the retirement of Dave & Ann. Olivia had bravely sailed on to finish the lap and received the gun as she did so.

On the third lap Simon increased his lead to two minutes and Mike T had managed to take 2nd place from Jon and they continued to have a great battle. There was no change in the 4th to 7th positions, but Nev & Mike had gained another two places to move to 8th place with William holding 9th. Sally & Mike C gained a place to move to 10th by passing Dean & Nick. The positions behind them remained the same, but Jeremy was closer to Chris H and Rick.

The fourth lap saw no change in order with the first eight boats, but Sally & Mike C had gained another place by passing William and were getting close to Nev & Mike in the other Leader. The only change behind these was Jeremy catching and passing Chris H. At the end of the lap all the boats from 8th place down received the finish gun.

The fifth and last lap saw Simon cross the line six minutes ahead of Mike T, who was only just ahead of Jon across the line. There was no change in the order of any boats on this lap, so the final positions on the water were –
1st Simon; 2nd Mike T; 3rd Jon; 4th Newton; 5th Steve; 6th Ralph; 7th Adrian

On corrected time the only change will be Newton moving up to 2nd place ahead of Mike T and Jon.

Thanks to James and the OOD Team of Bea, Gordon P, John W and Ken, Robbie H and Rhys.

Cobley Series 12 – 2nd December 2018

It was quite windy this morning with a SW wind of about 14 – 16 mph. Adrian was SOOD and presumably set a beat down the lake towards No 4, but unfortunately there was no record of the course on the race sheet.

Pursuit Race
There were 19 starters and with the strong wind the late starters were able to catch and pass the earlier slower handicap boats before the gun went.
The final positions were –
1st Steve – Aero; 2nd Simon – Blaze; 3rd Ralph – Laser; 4th Karen – Radial;
5th Newton & Ellen – RS200; 6th Mike Tr – Laser

Handicap Race
Karen, Jeremy, Rick and Olivia sat the second race out, so there were 15 starters. Ellen’s kicker broke just after starting and she had to retire and Ralph also retired on the first lap.
Simon B (Blaze) was first back through the line followed by Jon (Laser) just in front of Steve (Aero). Mike Tr (Laser) came through 20 seconds later in 4th place with Richard S (Laser) and James (Laser) chasing. Dave & Ann (Leader) were the first double hander followed by Will (Radial) just in front of brother Rhys (4.7) and Sally & Mike C (Leader) who crossed the line together. A minute and a half later Chris (Comet) and Jeremy (Laser) crossed the line together with Alistair S in another Laser chasing them.

On the second lap there was no change in the order of the first eight boats, but Sally & Mike had managed to secure 9th place. Behind them Jeremy had gained two places and Chris one by both getting past Rhys.

At the end of the third and last lap Simon crossed the line well ahead of Jon to take the victory. There was no further change in order down to 9th place, but Alistair gained two places to move up to 10th by passing Rhys, Chris and Jeremy.

The final order on the water was –
1st Simon; 2nd Jon; 3rd Steve S; 4th Mike Tr; 5th Richards S; 6th James.

On handicap Mike Tr leapfrogs Steve to take 3rd place pushing Steve down to 4th, but everyone else keeps their place.

Thanks to Adrian and the OOD Team (who should have been Colin H, Dave W, Julie V, Paul H and Susannah M, but none of their names were on the race sheet)
A reminder if you are on OOD duty make sure you put your name on the race sheet or you might get assigned another duty!

These were the last races of the series and Karen prevailed to win the Pursuit Series and Ellen & Newton took the Handicap Series. Congratulations to them.
